In the United States presidential election of 1824, John Quincy Adams was elected President on February 9, 1825, after the election was decided by the House of Representatives.

The United States presidential election of 1828 featured a rematch between John Quincy Adams, now incumbent President, and Andrew Jackson, the runner-up in the 1824 election.

Andrew Jackson won a plurality of electoral votes in the Election of 1824, but still lost to John Quincy Adams when the election was deferred to the House of Representatives.

Clay, the party's most prominent congressional leader, was chosen on the first ballot despite having lost two prior presidential elections: in 1824 to John Quincy Adams as a Democrat-Republican, then in 1832 to Andrew Jackson as a National Republican.

The first, that of 1824, saw John Quincy Adams elected by the House ; the second occurred just 12 years earlier in 1876 ; while the fourth would occur 112 years later in the year 2000.

Furthermore, when no candidate received an Electoral College majority in the 1824 presidential election causing the president to be decided by the House, Speaker Clay threw his support to John Quincy Adams instead of Andrew Jackson, thereby ensuring the former's victory.
