It is dedicated to William Petre ( the son of Byrd's patron John Petre, 1st Baron Petre ) who was only 15 years old in 1591 and could hardly have played it if it had been composed much earlier.

The main reason for the move was apparently the proximity of Byrd's patron Sir John Petre ( the son of the former Secretary of State Sir William Petre ).

They are dedicated to two members of the Catholic nobility, Henry Howard, 1st Earl of Northampton and Byrd's own patron Sir John Petre, who had been elevated to the peerage in 1603 under the title Lord Petre of Writtle.

To what extent Edward's document — especially this last change — was influenced by Northumberland, his confidant John Gates, or still other members of the Privy Chamber like Edward's tutor John Cheke or Secretary William Petre, is unclear.

It was created in 1603 for Sir John Petre.

the title is held by the latter's great-grandson, John Petre, 18th Baron Petre, who succeeded his father, Joseph William Lionel Petre, 17th Baron Petre in 1989.
