The band and its membership went through a number of re-configurations between 1968 and 1974, achieving their current form when Peart replaced original drummer John Rutsey in July 1974, two weeks before the group's first United States tour.

The original line-up formed in the neighbourhood of Willowdale in Toronto, Ontario, by Lifeson, bassist and front man Jeff Jones, and drummer John Rutsey.

At the same time, Davis recruited the players for a formation that became known as his " first great quintet ": John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

" Bonzo's Montreux " by Led Zeppelin is named after the city where the drums session of John Bonham was recorded in 1976.

* In 1974, Harry Nilsson covered the tune on his album Pussy Cats, produced by John Lennon and with Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner and Keith Moon on drums.

* John Marter ( aka Martyr ) – drums

Asia featuring John Payne debuted in 2007 with Payne on vocals / bass, Guthrie Govan on guitar, Erik Norlander on keyboards and Jay Schellen on drums.

Two more members were added around this time, Tjay Cantrelli ( aka John Barberis ) on woodwinds and Michael Stuart on drums.

Williams also played drums for the band Public Image Limited, fronted by former Sex Pistols singer John Lydon, on their 1986 release album / cassette / compact disc ( the album title varied depending on the format ).

The band were John French ( drums ), John Thomas ( keyboards ) and Jeff Moris Tepper and Denny Walley ( guitars ).

Post-Beefheart, receiving only a " grumpy " reception from him, the band reformed in 2003 with John French on lead vocals, Gary Lucas and Denny Walley on guitars, Rockette Morton on bass, and Robert Williams on drums.
