This became known as slash from the '/' mark used in adzines to differentiate a K & S story ( which would have been a Kirk and Spock friendship story ) from a K / S story, which would have been one with a romantic or sexual bent between the characters.

The name arises from the use of the slash symbol (/) in mentions in the late ' 70s of K / S ( meaning stories where Kirk and Spock had a romantic often sexual relationship ) as compared to the ampersand (&) conventionally used for K & S or Kirk and Spock friendship fiction.

For a time both slash and K / S ( for " Kirk / Spock ") were used interchangeably.

It was originally coined as a term to describe Kirk / Spock ( or " K / S "; sometimes spoken " Kirk-slash-Spock ", whence " Slash ") homosexual fan fiction.

Kirk / Spock, also commonly referred to as " K / S " and referring to James T. Kirk and Spock from Star Trek, is a pairing popular in slash fiction, possibly the first slash pairing according to Henry Jenkins.

As of 1998, " most " academic studies on slash focused on Kirk / Spock, as Star Trek was one of the most accessible titles for academics and their audience, and as the first slash pairing, K / S was developed independently from the influence of other slash fiction.

However, the most local historical figure is the Reverend Robert Kirk, born in 1644.

Kirk who provided the first translation into Gaidhlig of the Book of Psalms, however, he is better remembered for the publication of his book " The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies " in 1691.

Kirk had long been researching fairies, and the book collected several personal accounts and stories of folk who claimed to have encountered them.
