After the last Tudor Richmond, Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox became magnate here.

The first creation came in the Peerage of England in 1623 in favour of Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox.

In January 1658, Charles Stewart went into exile in France, and took up his residence in the house of his uncle, Ludovic, seigneur d ' Aubigny.

But James was unmoved by his application, and granted the revenue of his See to Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox.

The Sheffield family estates passed to the 2nd Duke's half-brother Charles Herbert Sheffield, the illegitimate son of the 1st Duke by Frances Stewart.

* John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany ( 1481 – 1536 ), only legitimate son of the 1st Duke, was restored to his father's dukedom and Earldom of March in 1515.

For John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl had forced his brother, Andrew Stewart, prebendary of Craig, upon the chapter, and had put him in possession of the bishop's palace.

They are directly descended from Sir Walter Stewart ( died 1425 ) Keeper of Dumbarton Castle, younger son of Murdoch Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany, son of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany, younger son of King Robert II of Scotland.

The eldest son of Lord Avondale ( killed 1513 ), Andrew Stewart, 2nd Lord Avondale, exchanged the Lordship of Avondale with Sir James Hamilton for that of Ochiltree ( see the Lord Ochiltree for further history of this title ) by an Act of Parliament in 1542, becoming Lord Stuart of Ochiltree.
