After the last Tudor Richmond, Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox became magnate here.

The first creation came in the Peerage of England in 1623 in favour of Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox.

The Scottish connection to the earldom of Richmond began in 1613 when Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox, was created Earl of Richmond.

In January 1658, Charles Stewart went into exile in France, and took up his residence in the house of his uncle, Ludovic, seigneur d ' Aubigny.
