Friends of the young Alexios II now tried to form a party against the empress mother and the prōtosebastos ; Alexios II's half-sister Maria, wife of Caesar John ( Renier of Montferrat ), stirred up riots in the streets of the capital.

He was believed to have arranged the poisoning of Alexios II's elder sister Maria the Porphyrogenita and her husband Renier of Montferrat, although Maria herself had encouraged him to intervene.

The kingdom of Cyprus passed to Hugh, his only surviving son, while the kingdom of Jerusalem passed to Maria, the daughter of Isabella by her previous marriage with Conrad of Montferrat.

Both Isabella and Amalric died in 1205 and again an underage girl, Isabella and Conrad's daughter Maria of Montferrat, became queen of Jerusalem.

In 1225 Frederick married Yolande of Jerusalem ( also known as Isabella ), daughter of John of Brienne ( nominal ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem ) and Maria of Montferrat.

Legally, he was actually only regent for his son Conrad II of Jerusalem, only child of Yolande and the grandson of Maria of Montferrat and John of Brienne, who had been born shortly before Frederick left in 1228.

In 1210, John married the heiress ( Mary ) Maria ( daughter of Isabella and Conrad of Montferrat ), assuming the title of king in right of his wife.

By his first wife, Maria of Montferrat, he had one child, Yolande, later Queen of Jerusalem.

Frederick had signed a marriage contract with the heir to the Marquisate of Monteferrat, Maria Palaeologina, with the aim of acquiring that land ; its marquess Boniface IV of Montferrat was in poor health.

In Montferrat he was succeeded by Boniface, but his own heiress was born posthumously: a daughter Maria of Montferrat, ' La Marquise ', who in 1205 became Queen of Jerusalem on Isabella's death, but died young in childbirth.

( No claim to Montferrat ever seems to have been made on behalf of Conrad's posthumous daughter Maria.

Isabella II was the only child of Maria of Montferrat, Queen of Jerusalem, and John of Brienne.

Isabella was already known to be carrying their first child – Maria of Montferrat, who later succeeded her mother as queen regnant ( see the Old French Continuation of William of Tyre, the Brevis Regni Hierosolymitani Historia in the Annals of Genoa, and the Muslim chronicler Imad ad-Din al-Isfahani ).

On her death on 5 April 1205, Isabella was succeeded as Queen of Jerusalem by her eldest daughter Maria of Montferrat.

Since she was already known to be pregnant with Conrad's child ( Maria of Montferrat ), the marriage was considered scandalous by some, but it was politically vital for her to acquire another husband to defend the kingdom.

Alexios II Komnenos or Alexius II Comnenus () ( 10 September 1169 – 24 September 1183, Constantinople ), Byzantine emperor ( 1180 – 1183 ), was the son of Emperor Manuel I Komnenos and Maria, daughter of Raymond, prince of Antioch.
