Its sister ship, Mariner 4, launched on November 28, 1964, was the first successful flyby of the planet Mars and gave the first glimpse of Mars at close range.

Mariner 4 ( together with Mariner 3 known as Mariner-Mars 1964 ) was the fourth in a series of spacecraft, launched on November 28, 1964, intended for planetary exploration in a flyby mode and performed the first successful flyby of the planet Mars, returning the first pictures of the Martian surface.

After 349 days in orbit, Mariner 9 had transmitted 7, 329 images, covering 100 % of Mars ' surface, whereas previous flyby missions had returned less than one thousand images covering only a small portion of the planetary surface.

This was less than half of the distance used by Mariner 4 on the previous US Mars flyby mission.

Mariner 3 ( together with Mariner 4 known as Mariner-Mars 1964 ) was one of two identical deep-space probes designed and built by Jet Propulsion Laboratory ( JPL ) for NASA's Mariner Mars 1964 Project that were intended to conduct close-up ( flyby ) scientific observations of the planet Mars and transmit information on interplanetary space and the space surrounding Mars, televised images of the Martian surface and occultation data of spacecraft radio signals as affected by the Martian atmosphere back to Earth.

The spacecraft were intended to explore Mars, and included flyby probes, landers and orbiters.

The Mars Observer spacecraft, also known as the Mars Geoscience / Climatology Orbiter, was a 1, 018-kilogram ( 2, 244 lb ) robotic space probe launched by NASA on September 25, 1992 to study the Martian surface, atmosphere, climate and magnetic field.

The orbiter worked until 25 July 1978, returning almost 16, 000 images in 706 orbits around Mars.

It was placed in a 302 × 33, 176 km orbit and turned off on 25 July 1978 after returning almost 16, 000 images in about 700 – 706 orbits around Mars.

The European Beagle 2 lander deployed successfully from the Mars Express spacecraft but the signal confirming a landing which should have come on 25 December 2003 was not received.

The U. S. Phoenix spacecraft successfully achieved soft landing on the surface of Mars on May 25, 2008, using a combination of parachutes and rocket descent engines.
