The Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis ( English: " Maurice House ") is an art museum in The Hague, the Netherlands.

In 1820, the Mauritshuis was bought by the Dutch state for the purpose of housing the Royal Cabinet of Paintings.

In 1822, the Mauritshuis was opened for the public and housed the Royal Cabinet of Paintings and the Royal Cabinet of Rarities.

In the 1630s Van Campen and Pieter Post designed the Mauritshuis in The Hague, a palace that is now home of a Royal Picture Gallery, and Van Campen alone designed the Netherlands ' first theatre, Amsterdam's Stadsschouwburg.

His most famous painting not to be confused with his work " The Bull " is The Young Bull ( circa 1647 ), that is now in Mauritshuis in The Hague, composed after drawings Potter made in nature.

In 1945, Sturla Gudlaugsson, a specialist in Dutch seventeenth-century painting and iconography and Director of the Netherlands Institute for Art History and the Mauritshuis in The Hague, wrote The Comedians in the work of Jan Steen and his Contemporaries, which revealed that a major influence on Jan Steen's work was the guild of the Rhetoricians or Rederijkers and their theatrical endeavors.

The residence he built in The Hague is now called the Mauritshuis, and is now a museum of Dutch paintings.

In contrast, a piece at the Hague representing a " Lady Reading a Letter as she crosses a Courtyard " ( Mauritshuis ) or a " Lady Consulting a Doctor ," ( in the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam ), imitates de Hooch.

The authority for this is the Mauritshuis in The Hague, which owns the picture and attributes this result to recent scholarship.

Some of his portraits are life-size, but the artist generally preferred to keep them on a considerably smaller scale, like the famous Four Amsterdam burgomasters assembled to receive Marie de Medici in 1638, now on display at the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague.

The architects now setting the agenda in the Netherlands, masters such as Jacob van Kampen ( Amsterdam City Hall ), Pieter Post ( Mauritshuis in the Hague ) and Philip Vingboons, now favoured a style characterized by sobriety and restraint.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has the richest collection of Mierevelt's works, chief of them being the portraits of William, Philip William, Maurice, and Frederick Henry of Orange, and of the count palatine Frederick V. At the Mauritshuis in The Hague are the portraits of four princes of the house of Orange, of Frederick V as king of Bohemia, and of Louise de Coligny as a widow.

* The Mauritshuis exhibits many paintings by Dutch masters, such as Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn and Paulus Potter.

His double portrait of the newly married Olycans hang side by side in the Mauritshuis, but many of his wedding portrait pairs have since been split up and are rarely seen together.

The Mauritshuis was named after Prince John Maurice and was built between 1636 and 1641, the period when he was the governor of Dutch Brazil.

In 1704, most of the interior of the Mauritshuis was destroyed by fire.

The Mauritshuis was a state museum until it was privatised in 1995.

There are also works of Hans Holbein in the collection in the Mauritshuis.

The land was near the property of a good friend of Huygens, Count Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen, who built his house, the Mauritshuis, around the same time.

One of the towers, simply known as het Torentje (' the Little Tower '; directly next to the Mauritshuis museum ) has been the office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands since 1982.

The neoclassical architect, Sir Robert Smirke, was asked to draw up plans for an eastern extension to the Museum "... for the reception of the Royal Library, and a Picture Gallery over it ..." and put forward plans for today's quadrangular building, much of which can be seen today.

The city lived a period of particular splendour: the Biblioteca Palatina ( Palatine Library ), the Archaeological Museum, the Picture Gallery and the Botanical Garden were founded, together with the Royal Printing Works directed by Giambattista Bodoni.

Today, the Zwinger is a museum complex that contains the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister ( Old Masters Picture Gallery ), the Dresden Porcelain Collection ( Porzellansammlung ), the Armory ( Rüstkammer ) and the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon ( Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments ).

The collection is currently called the Royal Picture Gallery.

Archer City and its Royal Theater are the basis for McMurtry's fictional towns of " Thalia " and " Anarene " in his novels, including The Last Picture Show.

The “ Picture House ” in Station road, began life as a roller skating rink called the Royal Rink, and was erected in 1910.

He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of Music and is a visiting professor at the Royal College of Music and the University of Nottingham.

The film won a total of 6 awards including ; the International Critics Prize ( FIPRESCI ) from the 2006 Toronto Film Festival, the International Emmy Award for the TV Movie / Mini-Series category in the ( UK ), the RTS Television Award in the Digital Channel Programme category from the Royal Television Society, the RTBF TV Prize for Best Picture Award from the Brussels European Film Festival for director Gabriel Range, the Banff Rockie Award from the Banff Television Festival for the film, and one for director Gabriel Range.

A review in the Evening Standard of the David Hockney Royal Academy Exhibition titled ' A Bigger Picture ' Sewell summed up his review by saying:

It is currently held in the Picture Gallery of Royal Holloway College, after being bought by Thomas Holloway in 1882, where it fetched a then-record price for a painting by a living artist at £ 6, 615.
