The Aventine sanctuary of Minerva continued to be an important center of the arts for much of the middle Roman Republic.

Patria Mercedes Mirabal ( February 27, 1924 – November 25, 1960 ), Bélgica Adela " Dedé " Mirabal-Reyes ( March 1, 1925 – present ), María Argentina Minerva Mirabal ( March 12, 1926 – November 25, 1960 ) and Antonia María Teresa Mirabal ( October 15, 1936 – November 25, 1960 ) were citizens of the Dominican Republic who fervently opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo.

The Republic of Minerva was one of the few modern attempts at creating a sovereign micronation on the reclaimed land of an artificial island in 1972.

The site chosen for the Republic was the Minerva Reefs in the Pacific Ocean.

The Republic of Minerva issued a declaration of independence on 19 January 1972, in letters to neighboring countries and even created their own currency.

In February 1972, Morris C. Davis was elected as Provisional President of the Republic of Minerva.

Since islands can, under international law, only be claimed if they are at least 30 cm above the high tide point, some have even attempted to build sovereign islands, like real-estate millionaire Michael Oliver's attempt at building a libertarian city-state called the Republic of Minerva in the southern Pacific Ocean.

Tonga lodged a counter claim, and the Minerva " principality " group claimed to have lodged a counter claim, see Republic of Minerva.

The country was then renamed the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan ( DRA ), and the PDPA regime lasted, in some form or another, until April 1992.

In June 1925, General Theodoros Pangalos launched a coup, and ruled as a dictator for a year until a counter-coup by another General, Georgios Kondylis, unseated him and restored the Republic.

On 10 October 1935, a few months after he suppressed the second attempt in March 1935, Georgios Kondylis, the former Venizelist stalwart, abolished the Republic in another coup, and declared the monarchy restored.

A short-lived monarchy ( 1914 – 1925 ) was succeeded by an even shorter-lived first Albanian Republic ( 1925 – 1928 ), to be replaced by another monarchy ( 1928 – 1939 ), which was conquered into Fascist Italy during World War II.

In September 1830, under the guidance of General José Domingo Espinar, the local military commander who rebelled against the nation's central government in response to his being transferred to another command, Panama separated from the Republic of Colombia and requested that general Simón Bolívar take direct command of the Isthmus Department.

Under a federalist constitution that was later brought up in 1858 ( and another one in 1863 ), Panama and other constituent states gained almost complete autonomy on many levels of their administration, which led to an often anarchic national state of affairs that lasted roughly until Colombia's return to centralism in 1886 with the establishment of a new Republic of Colombia.
