The cliffs from Backways Cove, south of Trebarwith Strand to Willapark just to the south of Boscastle are part of the Tintagel Cliffs SSSI ( a Site of Special Scientific Interest ), designated for both its maritime heaths and geological features.

In a national survey carried out in the early 1970s, the chalk scrub element of the SSSI is recognised as being a nationally important example of a stage in the succession from juniper scrub to woodland.

The SSSI includes most of the foreshore upstream from Cardiff and Brean Down and most of the upper estuary as far as Sharpness.

There is a 1. 3 hectare nature reserve and SSSI at the former quarry at OS ref SK 970108, south of Bloody Oaks on the south side of the road from Empingham to Bloody Oaks.

Apart from the swans, the Fleet and Chesil Beach attracts many species of waterfowl and over 300 different varieties have been recorded leading to the area being designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ), a Special Protected Area ( SPA ) and a Special Area of Conservation ( SAC ).

The SSSI contains 2 species on the Red Data Book of rare and endangered plant species ; early meadow-grass ( poa infirma ) and slender bird ’ s-foot-trefoil ( from the lotus genus ).

It was strongly supported by local business leaders but met opposition from local residents, campaigners and environmental groups anxious to preserve the 4, 000-year-old sand dunes that are designated an SSSI ( Site of Special Scientific Interest ).

The decision to notify an SSSI is made by the official nature conservation body ( the appropriate conservation body ) for that part of the United Kingdom: Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage or the Countryside Council for Wales.

Damage, destruction or disturbance of SSSI habitats and features can lead to the following actions by Natural England:

This internationally important reserve is part of the North Norfolk Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ) and the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB ), and is also protected through Natura 2000, Special Protection Area ( SPA ) and Ramsar listings.

Its course takes it through the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the river between Marlborough and Woolhampton is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ).
