Sultan Said Ali bin Said Omar of Grande Comore ( 1897 )

In 1886 Said Ali bin Said Omar, Sultan of Bambao, signed an agreement with the French government that allowed France to establish a protectorate over the entire island of Ngazidja ( Grande Comore ; protectorates were also established over Ndzwani ( Anjouan ), and Mwali ( Mohéli island in French ) the same year.

In 1865 or 1866 Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar began building a new city very close to Mzizima and named it Dar es Salaam.

The death of Sa ' id bin Sultan in 1856 prompted a further division: the descendants of the late sultan ruled Muscat and Oman ( Thuwaini ibn Said Al-Busaid, r. 1856 – 1866 ) and Zanzibar ( Mayid ibn Said Al-Busaid, r. 1856 – 1870 ); the Qais branch intermittently allied itself with the ulama to restore imamate legitimacy.

In 1970, Qaboos bin Said Al Said ousted his father, Sa ' id bin Taymur, who later died in exile in London.

When Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said assumed power in 1970, Oman had limited contacts with the outside world, including neighbouring Arab states.

Its capital, Salalah, was the permanent residence of Sultan Said ibn Taimur Al Said and the birthplace of the present sultan, Qabus ibn Said.

In the Middle East, faced by the 1958 collapse of the Baghdad Pact and the spread of Soviet influence, Macmillan acted decisively to restore the confidence of Persian Gulf allies, using the Royal Air Force and special forces to defeat a revolt backed by Saudi Arabia and Egypt against the Sultan of Oman, Said bin Taimur, in July 1957, deploying airborne battalions to defend Jordan against Syrian subversion in July 1958, and deterring a threatened Iraqi invasion of Kuwait by landing a brigade group in July 1960.

Said bin Taimur ( 13 August 1910 – 19 October 1972 ) () was the sultan of Muscat and Oman ( the country later renamed to Oman ) from 10 February 1932 until his overthrow on 23 July 1970.

As sultan, oil wealth would have allowed Sultan Said bin Taimur to modernize his country, and, in fact, he secured British recognition of its independence in 1951.

He rose to power after overthrowing his father, Said bin Taimur, in a palace coup in 1970.

He is the only son of Sultan Said bin Taimur and princess Mazoon al-Mashani.

His son, Taimur bin Faisal, received the KCIE in 1926 and his grandson, Said bin Taimur, received the GCIE in 1945.

Twelve years later, however, when geologists began intensively searching for oil in neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Oman's Sultan Said bin Taimur granted a 75-year concession to the Iraq Petroleum Company ( IPC ).

A United States Department of State bulletin on the sultan of Muscat and Oman in February 1938 describes the situation in which Sultan Said ibn Taimur found himself after assuming power: " The young Sultan found the country practically bankrupt and his troubles were further complicated by tribal unrest and conspiracy by certain of his uncles, one of whom immediately profited by the occasion to set up an independent regime.

Captain Hume of HMS Scarborough reported on 6 February that a " Pyrate Ship of 36 Guns and 250 men, and a Sloop of 10 Guns and 100 men were Said to be Cruizing amongst the Leeward Islands ".

* On February 4, 2008 the Israeli Air Force assassinated the PRC's top military leader, Amer Qarmut ( Abu Said ) in response to a joint suicide bombing by the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Dimona, which killed one Israeli.

Both Leopold and Sultan Barghash bin Said agreed and on February 24, 1887, Hamed bin Mohammed el Murgebi accepted.

He ruled Zanzibar from March 26, 1888 to February 13, 1890 and was succeeded by his brother, Ali bin Said.

Al Ahly supporters were targeted in a post-match riot at Port Said Stadium in February 2012 which resulted in numerous deaths ( 74 ).

Zuhair al Said was killed on 10 February 2012 when police opened fire to disperse protesters in the town of al Awamiya, in the Qatif region.
