Saint Adalbert, Czech: ;, ( c. 956 – April 23, 997 ), Czech Roman Catholic saint, a Bishop of Prague and a missionary, was martyred in his efforts to convert the Baltic Prussians.

Adalbert was a well-educated man, having studied for about ten years ( 970-80 ) in Magdeburg under Saint Adalbert of Magdeburg.

In 981 his father, Prince Slavnik, and both his mentors died. Saint Adalbert.

In 982, still not yet thirty years old, Adalbert became the Bishop of Prague .< ref >“ Saint Adalbert of Prague ”.

Saint Boniface ( c 680 – 750 ), Pope Gregory I ( c 540 – 604, r. 590 – 604 ), Adalbert of Egmond ( 8th century ), and priest Jeroen van Noordwijk, depicted in a 1529 painting by Jan Joostsz van Hillegom, currently on display at the Frans Hals Museum.

At the age of six he was sent to be educated in Magdeburg, seat of Adalbert of Magdeburg, the teacher and namesake of Saint Adalbert.

While in Rome for Otto's imperial coronation, Bruno met Saint Adalbert of Prague, the first Apostle of the Prussians, killed a year later, which inspired Bruno to write a biography of St Adalbert when he reached the recently Christianized and consolidated Kingdom of Hungary himself.

Bruno spent much time at the monastery where Adalbert had become a monk and where abbot John Canaparius may have written a life of Saint Adalbert.

Thietmar of Merseburg says that the first archbishop of Magdeburg, Saint Adalbert of Magdeburg, before being promoted to this high rank, was sent by Emperor Otto to the country of the Rus ' ( Rusciae ) as a simple bishop but was expelled by pagan allies of Svyatoslav I.

He expected absolute obedience, so much so that it took the mediation of Archbishop Adalbert of Mainz to prevent the suspension of Saint Otto of Bamberg for non-attendance.

From the eleventh century they rested at the church of Saint Adalbert, now Saint Bartholomew, on the island in the Tiber in Rome ; in 1908 Pope Pius X permitted them to be translated to the new Cathedral at Nola, where they were reinterred on May 15, 1909.

According to his legends, Vajk was baptized a Christian by Saint Adalbert of Prague.

An equestrian statue of Saint Wenceslaus and other patrons of Bohemia ( St. Adalbert, St. Ludmila, St. Prokop and St. Agnes of Bohemia ) is located on Wenceslaus Square in Prague.

Otto III gave Bolesław a replica of his Holy Lance ( part of the Imperial Regalia ) and Bolesław presented the Emperor with a relic, an arm of Saint Adalbert in exchange.

On the same foreign visit, Otto III raised Gniezno to the rank of an archbishopric and installed Radzim Gaudenty, a brother of Saint Adalbert, as its first archbishop.

In 999 Bishop Adalbert was canonized as Saint Adalbert by Pope Sylvester II.

Prague Castle and much of the cathedral of Saint Vitus by Peter Parler were completed under his patronage.

A student in Adalbert's time who went on to do important work among the Slavs was Vojtěch of Prague, later canonized as Saint Adalbert of Prague.

It was later performed in Vienna, Prague, and Saint Petersburg.

During the Middle Ages the Christian monasteries and missionaries such as Saint Patrick, and Adalbert of Prague propagated learning and religion beyond the boundaries of the old Roman Empire.

The hauberk stored in the Prague Cathedral, dating from the 12th century, is one of the earliest surviving examples from Central Europe and was supposedly owned by Saint Wenceslaus.

He was a member of many German and foreign scientific societies, possessor of honorary degrees from the universities of Königsberg, Prague, Saint Petersburg, Dorpat and Edinburgh, and one of the founders of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft.

There are a few roughly half-size statues of Saint George and the Dragon, including a famous one in Prague.
