After the WWII, the Soka Gakkai emerged as a growing lay organization affiliated with and based on the teachings of Nichiren Shoshu.

History of the relationships between the two shows a sequence of conflicts the most serious of which has led to the resignation of the third president of Soka Gakkai in 1979.

In the centre of this conflict was, to what seemed to some priests and lay believers, the too large influence of Soka Gakkai in affairs of the temple and also publically slandering the legitimacy of then High Priest Niken Abe.
