There were many great encyclopedists throughout Chinese history, including the scientist and statesman Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) with his Dream Pool Essays of 1088, the statesman, inventor, and agronomist Wang Zhen ( active 1290 – 1333 ) with his Nong Shu of 1313, and the written Tiangong Kaiwu of Song Yingxing ( 1587 – 1666 ), the latter of whom was termed the " Diderot of China " by British historian Joseph Needham.

" The ancient Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) was the first person to write of the magnetic needle compass and that it improved the accuracy of navigation by employing the astronomical concept of true north ( Dream Pool Essays, AD 1088 ), and by the 12th century the Chinese were known to use the lodestone compass for navigation.

* Zhu Yu's book is the first to report the use of a magnetic compass for navigation at sea, although the first actual description of the magnetic compass is by another Chinese writer Shen Kuo in his Dream Pool Essays published in 1088.

In 1193, Zhou Bida, an officer of Southern Song Dynasty, made a set of clay movable-type method according to the method described by Shen Kuo in his Dream Pool Essays, and printed his book Notes of The Jade Hall 《 玉堂杂记 》.

The Song Dynasty Chinese scientist Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) experimented with a camera obscura, and was the first to apply geometrical and quantitative attributes to it in his book of 1088 AD, the Dream Pool Essays.

Shen Kuo's Dream Pool Essays argued against traditional Chinese beliefs in anatomy ( such as his argument for two throat valves instead of three ); this perhaps spurred the interest in the performance of post-mortem autopsies in China during the 12th century.

The scientist, statesman, and general Shen Kuo ( 1031-1095 AD ) was the author of the Dream Pool Essays ( 1088 ), a large book of scientific literature that included the oldest description of the magnetized compass.

The Song Dynasty was also a period of great scientific literature, and saw the creation of works such as Su Song's Xin Yixiang Fayao and Shen Kuo's Dream Pool Essays.

They replaced earlier double slipways that had caused trouble and are mentioned by the Chinese polymath Shen Kuo ( 1031 – 1095 ) in his book Dream Pool Essays ( published in 1088 ), and fully described in the Chinese historical text Song Shi ( compiled in 1345 ):

Outside China, these seem to be the earliest records ( the Chinese encyclopaedist Shen Kuo gave the first clear account of suspended magnetic compasses a hundred years earlier in 1088 AD with his book Mengxibitan, or Dream Pool Essays ).

* 1088-In his Dream Pool Essays ( 梦溪笔谈 ), the Chinese scientist Shen Kuo wrote vivid descriptions of tornadoes, that rainbows were formed by the shadow of the sun in rain, occurring when the sun would shine upon it, and the curious common phenomena of the effect of lightning that, when striking a house, would merely scorch the walls a bit but completely melt to liquid all metal objects inside.

In a garden estate on the outskirts of Zhenjiang, the scientist and statesman Shen Kuo ( 1031-1095 AD ) lived the rest of his days in isolation, where he wrote his famous Dream Pool Essays ( 1088 ).

It was there that Martin Luther King gave his " I Have a Dream " speech, delivered to a crowd of a quarter million people standing around ( and in ) the Reflecting Pool.

He was recorded only in the Writings Beside the Meng Creek ( 夢溪筆談 Mengxi Bitan, or Dream Pool Essays ) by Chinese scholar, official, and polymath scientist Shen Kuo ( 沈括 ) ( 1031 – 1095 ).

In his Dream Pool Essays of 1088, Shen Kuo took an interdisciplinary approach to archaeology, fusing that subject with his work in optics, metallurgy, music, and geometry.

In his Dream Pool Essays (; Mengxi Bitan ) of 1088, Shen was the first to describe the magnetic needle compass, which would be used for navigation ( first described in Europe by Alexander Neckam in 1187 ).

Shen Kuo wrote several other books besides the Dream Pool Essays, yet much of the writing in his other books has not survived.

In regards to the Lý Dynasty of Đại Việt ( in modern northern Vietnam ), Shen demonstrated in his Dream Pool Essays that he was familiar with the key players ( on the Vietnamese side ) in the prelude to the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1075 – 1077.

The film Blade Runner ( 1982 ), adapted from Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ?, is set in 2019 in a dystopian future in which manufactured beings called replicants are slaves used on space colonies and are legal prey on Earth to various bounty hunters who " retire " ( kill ) them.

Those oft are Stratagems which Errors seem, Nor is it Homer Nods, but We that Dream.

The goddess is also referenced indirectly in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Though not named as Caledfwlch, Arthur's sword is described vividly in The Dream of Rhonabwy one of the tales associated with the Mabinogion:

Ellis Island: The Dream of America is a work for actors and orchestra with projected images by Peter Boyer, composed in 2001-02.

Middle High German has a feminine singular elbe and a plural elbe, elber, but the word becomes very rare, mostly surviving in the adjective elbisch, and is replaced by the English form elf, elfen via 18th century German translations of Shakespeare's A Midsummernight's Dream.

In " Dream Thieves ", it is revealed that Brueghel killed Mahler and sold off his body during a slow night of business, and replaced him with a new man whom he nicknamed " Mahler " as a mocking tribute.

In the foundation myth expressed in the medieval Turkish story known as " Osman's Dream ", the young Osman was inspired to conquest by a prescient vision of empire ( according to his dream, the empire is a big tree whose roots spread through three continents and whose branches cover the sky ).

Considered one of the most beautiful of all Old English poems is Dream of the Rood, contained in the Vercelli Book.

Theseus is a prominent character as the Duke of Athens in William Shakespeare's plays, A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Two Noble Kinsmen.
