* The Battle of Ningyuan in Xingcheng, Liaoning, China: With a much smaller force, the Ming Dynasty commander Yuan Chonghuan defeats the Manchu tribal leader Nurhaci, who dies soon after and is succeeded by Huang Taiji.

While the Manchu ruling elite at the Beijing imperial court and posts of authority throughout China was increasingly sinicized, the Qing imperial government viewed the Manchu communities ( as well as those of various tribal people ) in Manchuria as a place where traditional Manchu virtues could be preserved, and as a reservoir of military manpower fully dedicated to the regime.

The fundamental building block of the banners was the company ( Manchu: 20px niru, Chinese: 佐領 zuǒlǐng ), some of which reflected pre-existing lineage or tribal connections in their membership, while others deliberately overrode such connections in an effort to create a more centralized military force.

It was made up of around 6, 000 Manchu and Mongol forces supplemented by tribal soldiers under the able general Fukang ' an, with Hailancha as his deputy.

The next year, the Manchu armies led by Dodo advanced south and conquered Yangzhou and Nanjing while the Ming leader defending Yangzhou, Shi Kefa, was killed.

The Manchu leader Nurhaci embarked on the conquest of Liaodong from the Ming dynasty, luring Chinese to his side to defect by threatening them with destruction and at the same time also promising them rewards, with important positions.

It was said by the Manchu leader that " since the Chinese generals and Manchu women lived together and ate together, it would help these surrendered generals to forget their motherland.

Later these were unified in Manchu Qing Empire with Nurhaci as their leader and founder.

He contacted the Manchu leader Dorgon and as a result threw open the gates of Shanhaiguan to Manchu soldiers.

They preserved their independence until they had to seek help from the Kangxi Emperor of the Manchu Qing Dynasty against the Dzungar leader Galdan in 1688.

According to the Veritable Records (; ), in 1599 the Manchu leader Nurhaci decided to convert the Mongolian alphabet to make it suitable for the Manchu people.

In contrast to General Zuo, the Manchu leader Dolongga wanted to massacre all the Muslims and saw them all as the enemy.

Han Yun, who participated in the rebellion of Yi Gwal, fled to Manchuria and urged the Manchu leader Nurhaci to attack Joseon ; thus the friendly relationship between Manchu and Korea ended.

In 1616, Nurhaci broke away from the power of the decaying Ming Dynasty and established the Later Jin Dynasty ( Manchu :, Möllendorff: amaga aisin gurun ), domestically called the State of Manchu ( Manchu :, Möllendorff: manju gurun ), and unified Manchu tribes, establishing ( or at least expanding ) the Manchu Banner system, a military structure which made their forces quite resilient in the face of superior Ming Dynasty numbers in the field.

Over a period of thirty years from 1586, Nurhaci, a chieftain of the Jianzhou Jurchens, united the Jurchen tribes, which was later renamed Manchu by his son Hung Taiji.

Dorgon was born of the Manchu Aisin Gioro clan as the 14th son of Nurhaci, khan of the Later Jin Dynasty ( later renamed to Qing Dynasty by Nurhaci's successor Hong Taiji ).

The range represents the mythical birthplace of Bukūri Yongšon, ancestor of Nurhaci and the Aisin Gioro Imperial family, who were the founders of the Manchu state and the Chinese Qing Dynasty.

Jurchen and Manchu rulers also used the title Khan ( Han in Manchu ); for example, Nurhaci was called Genggiyen Han.

The fall of the Ming Dynasty was a protracted affair, its roots beginning as early as 1600 with the emergence of the Manchu under Nurhaci.

There are many theories as to the reason for the choice of name but two of the most commonly cited are its sounding similar to the Manchu word for " brave " and a possible connection with the Bodhisattva Manjusri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, of whom Nurhaci claimed to be an incarnation.

Giocangga ( Manchu: 20px ; ) ( died 1582 ) was the grandfather of Nurhaci, the man who was to unify the Jurchen peoples and begin building what later became the Manchu state.

Hooge was born of the Manchu Aisin Gioro clan as the eldest son of Hong Taiji, son of the Qing Dynasty's founder Nurhaci.

Yuan's military career reached its height when he defeated Nurhaci and the Manchu army in the first Battle of Ningyuan.

It is noted that Yuan was said to have studied every aspect of the cannon for it to fire accurately at the position he wanted, and this is given as the reason why the Manchu ruler Nurhaci, although well-protected by his elite guards in a safe position, was wounded by cannon fire.

The Seven Grievances ( Manchu: 20px nadan koro ; ) was a manifesto announced by Nurhaci on the Thirteenth day of the Fourth lunar month in the Third year of Tianming () era ( 7 May 1618 ).

The unification of the Jianzhou Jurchens provided the basis for Nurhaci to expand his power throughout southern and central Manchuria, and to create a true Manchu state.

The Wanli Emperor ( ruled in 1572 – 1620 ) made attempts to reestablish Sino-Tibetan relations in the wake of a Mongol-Tibetan alliance initiated in 1578, the latter of which affected the foreign policy of the subsequent Manchu Qing Dynasty ( 1644 – 1912 ) of China in their support for the Dalai Lama of the Yellow Hat sect.

The Chahar royal family kept favorable relations with the Manchu imperial family until Makata gege, who was a daughter of Hong Taiji and married to the Chahar Mongol prince, died in 1663.
