Project Xanadu was the first hypertext project, founded in 1960 by Ted Nelson.

Xanadu was visited by the Venetian traveler Marco Polo in about 1275, and in 1797 inspired a famous poem, Kubla Khan, by one of the leading English poets of the Romanticism movement, Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Thanks to a poem by Coleridge, Xanadu became a metaphor for splendor and opulence.

Xanadu was turned into a surprising hit Broadway Musical that opened on 10 July 2007 at the Helen Hayes Theatre to uniformly good reviews and received 4 Tony Award nominations.

Kelly continued to make frequent TV appearances and, in 1980, appeared in an acting and dancing role opposite Olivia Newton-John in Xanadu ( 1980 ), an expensive theatrical flop which has since attained a cult following.

Geddy would use this double neck live for Xanadu, as well as a white 4080 / 6 for A Passage to Bangkok, all throughout the " Kings " tour in 1977 – 78, until retiring it at the end of the " Moving Pictures " Tour in 1981.

Meanwhile Nelson, who had been working on and advocating his Xanadu system for over two decades, along with the commercial success of HyperCard, stirred Autodesk to invest in his revolutionary ideas.

According to Coleridge's Preface to Kubla Khan, the poem was composed one night after he experienced an opium influenced dream after reading a work describing Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and Emperor of China Kublai Khan.

The book contained a brief description of Xanadu, the summer capital of the Mongol ruler Kublai Khan.

The text about Xanadu in Purchas, His Pilgrimage, which Coleridge admitted he did not remember exactly, was: " In Xandu did Cublai Can build a stately Pallace, encompassing sixteen miles of plaine ground with a wall, wherein are fertile Meddowes, pleasant Springs, delightfull streames, and all sorts of beasts of chase and game, and in the middest thereof a sumptuous house of pleasure, which may be moved from place to place.

This quotation was based upon the writings of the Venetian explorer Marco Polo who is widely believed to have visited Xanadu in about 1275.

The poem begins with a fanciful description of Kublai Khan's capital Xanadu, which Coleridge places near the river Alph, which passes through caverns before reaching a dark or dead sea.

The finite property of the constructed walls of Xanadu are contrasted with the infinite properties of the natural caves through which the river runs.

Though the exterior of Xanadu is presented in images of darkness, and in context of the dead sea, we are reminded of the " miracle " and " pleasure " of Kubla Khan's creation.

The subsequent passage refers to unnamed witnesses who may also hear this, and thereby share in the narrator's vision of a replicated, ethereal, Xanadu.

And over it is cast the glamour, enhanced beyond all reckoning in the dream, of the remote in time and space – that visionary presence of a vague and gorgeous and mysterious Past which brooded, as Coleridge read, above the inscrutable Nile, and domed pavilions in Cashmere, and the vanished stateliness of Xanadu.

The Road to Xanadu.

Productions of the 1980s and 1990s included The Apple, Xanadu, Annie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Victor Victoria, Footloose, Little Shop of Horrors, Absolute Beginners, Evita and Everyone Says I Love You.

In the 1970s Ted Nelson's original " Xanadu " hypertext repository was envisioned as such a service.

Nelson founded Project Xanadu in 1960 with the goal of creating a computer network with a simple user interface.

Much of his adult life has been devoted to working on Xanadu and advocating it.

The Xanadu project itself failed to flourish, for a variety of reasons which are disputed.

Ted Nelson is currently working on a new information structure, ZigZag, which is described on the Xanadu project website, which also hosts two versions of the Xanadu code.
