In 1980 Jeff Lynne was asked to write for the soundtrack of the musical film Xanadu, with the other half written by John Farrar and performed by the film's star Olivia Newton-John.

Xanadu was turned into a surprising hit Broadway Musical that opened on 10 July 2007 at the Helen Hayes Theatre to uniformly good reviews and received 4 Tony Award nominations.

According to Coleridge's Preface to Kubla Khan, the poem was composed one night after he experienced an opium influenced dream after reading a work describing Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and Emperor of China Kublai Khan.

The text about Xanadu in Purchas, His Pilgrimage, which Coleridge admitted he did not remember exactly, was: " In Xandu did Cublai Can build a stately Pallace, encompassing sixteen miles of plaine ground with a wall, wherein are fertile Meddowes, pleasant Springs, delightfull streames, and all sorts of beasts of chase and game, and in the middest thereof a sumptuous house of pleasure, which may be moved from place to place.

This quotation was based upon the writings of the Venetian explorer Marco Polo who is widely believed to have visited Xanadu in about 1275.

In the 1970s Ted Nelson's original " Xanadu " hypertext repository was envisioned as such a service.

The term " hyperlink " was coined in 1965 ( or possibly 1964 ) by Ted Nelson at the start of Project Xanadu.

Though Nelson's Xanadu Corporation was eventually funded by Autodesk in the 1980s, it never created this proprietary public-access network.

One early showcase for Dunn was Orson Welles ' Citizen Kane, where such locations as Xanadu ( and some of Gregg Toland's famous ' deep focus ' shots ) were essentially created by Dunn's optical printer.

In 1797, according to his own account, the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge was reading about Xanadu in Purchas his Pilgrimage, fell asleep, and had an opium-inspired dream.

Unfortunately Coleridge's writing was interrupted by an unnamed " man from Porlock ," causing him to forget much of the dream, but his images of Xanadu became one of the best-known poems in the English language.

This film starred Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John and was widely considered a big-budget flop, but its soundtrack spawned several hit singles for Ms. Newton-John, such as the # 1 hit " Magic ", a duet with Cliff Richard called " Suddenly ", and, with Electric Light Orchestra accompaniment, the title song " Xanadu ".

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union ( IAU ) named a continent-sized area of Saturn's moon Titan as Xanadu after it was referred from Coleridge's poem.

The land is constructed as a paradisical garden, but like Eden after Man's fall, Xanadu is isolated by walls.

In 1967, while working for Harcourt, Brace, he named his project Xanadu, in honour of the poem " Kubla Khan " by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
