Masaaki Kimura has suggested that certain underwater features located off the coast of Yonaguni Island, Japan ( popularly known as the Yonaguni Monument ) are ruins of Mu ( or " ruins of the lost world of Muin " according to CNN ).

is a town located entirely on Yonaguni Island in the Yaeyama District, Okinawa, Japan.

Yonaguni, more specifically Cape Irizaki at the western tip of the island, is the westernmost point of Japan.

As a result of increased tensions between Japan and China / Taiwan over the disputed sovereignty of the Japanese-controlled uninhabited Senkaku / Diaoyu / Tiaoyutai Islands which are located roughly 80 nautical miles north-northeast of the Yonaguni Islands, Japan intends to station 100 troops on Yonaguni to counter a perceived threat from Chinese forces.

Yonaguni is known in Japan for the hanazake, a 120-proof rice-based distilled beverage ( awamori ) produced only on the island.

The isles are the remotest part of Japan from the main islands and contains Japan's most southern ( Hateruma ) and most western ( Yonaguni ) inhabited islands.

Yonaguni, however, remained independent until 1522, supposedly under the legendary female leader, though there is some debate as to whether the legendary figure ever existed.

There are three native languages on the islands ; Miyako language on the Miyako Islands, Yonaguni language on Yonaguni, and Yaeyama language on the other Yaeyama Islands.

Two airports, Hateruma Airport on Hateruma island in Taketomi and Yonaguni Airport in Yonaguni serve the district.

The town includes all of the islands in the Yaeyama District excluding Ishigaki, Yonaguni, and the Senkaku Islands.

Recently, a megalith known as the Yonaguni Monument was discovered on the seafloor off the southern edge of the island and has been in the spotlight as possible man-made, underwater ruins.
