In 1842, the French Navy took over Tahiti under Admiral Abel Aubert Dupetit Thouars.

After the 1722 Roggeveen visit, all of the moai that had been erected on ahus were toppled, with the last standing statues reported in 1838 by Abel Aubert Dupetit Thouars, and no upright statues by 1868, apart from the partially buried ones on the outer slopes of Rano Raraku.

On 1 July 1832, Jardine, Matheson and Company, a partnership, between William Jardine, James Matheson as senior partners, and Hollingworth Magniac, Alexander Matheson, Jardine's nephew Andrew Johnstone, Matheson's nephew Hugh Matheson, John Abel Smith, and Henry Wright, as the first partners, was formed in China, taking the Chinese name ' Ewo ' ( 怡和 ) pronounced " Yee-Wo " and meaning ' Happy Harmony '.

Abel left the Wings for Chicago following the season, and his spot on the roster was replaced by Alex Delvecchio.

The theory of field extensions ( including Galois theory ) involves the roots of polynomials with coefficients in a field ; among other results, this theory leads to impossibility proofs for the classical problems of angle trisection and squaring the circle with a compass and straightedge, as well as a proof of the Abel – Ruffini theorem on the algebraic insolubility of quintic equations.

Ten years later, Dickens's Great Expectations contains many Hamlet-like plot elements: it is driven by revenge-motivated actions, contains ghost-like characters ( Abel Magwitch and Miss Havisham ), and focuses on the hero's guilt.

Abel had also started work on his first achievement, the quintic equation in radicals.

While in Copenhagen, Abel did some work on Fermat's Last Theorem.

While studying these languages, Abel published his first notable work in 1824, Mémoire sur les équations algébriques où on démontre l ' impossibilité de la résolution de l ' équation générale du cinquième degré ( Memoir on algebraic equations, in which the impossibility of solving the general equation of the fifth degree is proven ).

July 1826 Abel traveled on his own from Basel to Paris.

Abel had sent most of his work to Berlin to be published in Crelles Journal, but he had saved what he regarded his most important work for the French Academy of Sciences, a theorem on addition of algebraic differentials.

Crelle wrote to Abel on 8 April 1829 to tell him the good news, but it came too late.

Among his other accomplishments, Abel wrote a monumental work on elliptic functions which, however, was not discovered until after his death.

A statue of Abel stands in Oslo, and crater Abel on the Moon was named after him.

Abel was sentenced to " be drawn on a hurdle to the place of execution, there to be hanged, cut down alive, your members to be cut off and cast in the fire, your bowels burnt before your eyes, your head smitten off, your body to be quartered at the King's will, and God have mercy on your soul.

The first European explorer to discover New Zealand was Abel Janszoon Tasman on 13 December 1642.
