All this time, Crelle had been searching for a new job for Abel in Berlin, and had actually managed to have him appointed a professor at a university.

Here he became acquainted with A. L. Crelle, who, encouraged by his ability and by that of N. H. Abel, then also staying at Berlin, founded his famous Journal ( 1826 ).

He became seriously ill on the journey and, although a temporary improvement allowed the couple to enjoy the holiday together, died just two days before a letter arrived from August Crelle.

The journal was founded by August Leopold Crelle ( Berlin ) in 1826 and edited by him until his death in 1855.

He then spent four months in Berlin, where he became well acquainted with August Leopold Crelle, who was then about to publish his mathematical journal, Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik.

His papers, numbering over 100, were published principally in the Philosophical Transactions, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Quarterly Journal of Mathematics, Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society and Crelle, and one or two in the Comptes rendus of the Paris Academy ; a list of them, arranged according to the several journals in which they originally appeared, with short notes upon the less familiar memoirs, is given in Nature, xxvii, 599.

August Leopold Crelle ( 17 March 1780 – 6 October 1855 ) was a German mathematician.

There she extracted two limp vellum sheets and wrote off the letters, one to Abel, one to Mark.
