In 1867 Armstrong reached an agreement with Charles Mitchell, a shipbuilder in Low Walker, whereby Mitchells would build warships and Elswick would provide the guns.

In 1882 Armstrong ’ s company merged with Mitchells to form Sir William Armstrong, Mitchell and Co. Ltd. and in 1884 a shipyard opened at Elswick to specialise in warship production.

Armstrong was chairman of the short-lived comedy panel show Best of the Worst which featured team captains David Mitchell and Johnny Vaughan.

He was a team captain on the Channel 4 comedy panel show Best of the Worst that also features team captain David Mitchell ( Peep Show ), and chairman Alexander Armstrong.

He became a shipbuilder in his own right at the Low Walker yard on the Tyne in 1852, which joined in partnership with the Armstrong yard to form Armstrong Mitchell in 1882.

In 1927, Vickers merged with the Tyneside based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by W. G. Armstrong, to become Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd. Armstrong Whitworth had developed along similar lines to Vickers, expanding into various military sectors and was notable for their artillery manufacture at Elswick and shipbuilding at a yard at High Walker on the River Tyne.

In 1897 the company merged with the company of Armstrong ’ s old rival, Joseph Whitworth, and became Sir W. G.

In 1959 Bristol Aircraft merged with several major British aircraft companies to form the British Aircraft Corporation ( BAC ), and Bristol Aero Engines merged with Armstrong Siddeley to form Bristol Siddeley.

In 1956 the division was renamed Bristol Aero Engines, and then merged with Armstrong Siddeley in 1958 to form Bristol Siddeley as a counterpart of the airframe-producing company mergers that formed BAC.

In 1959, the aero engine business, Armstrong Siddeley was merged with that of the Bristol Aero Engines to form Bristol Siddeley.

Vickers merged with the Tyneside-based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by W. G. Armstrong, to become Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd. Armstrong Whitworth and Vickers had developed along similar lines, expanding into various military sectors and produced a whole suite of military products.

In 1927, Armstrong Whitworth merged its heavy engineering interests with Vickers to form Vickers-Armstrongs.

Armstrong Siddeley was merged with the aircraft engine business of Bristol Aero Engines that had developed the Olympus engines for the TSR 2 ( that engine was subsequently developed for used in ) to form Bristol Siddeley as part of an ongoing rationalisation of the British aerospace sector.

The Armstrong-Whitworth was manufactured from 1904 ( when the company took over construction of the Wilson-Pilcher designed by Walter Gordon Wilson ) until 1919 ( when the company merged with Siddeley-Deasy and began construction of the Armstrong Siddeley ) in Coventry.

When Armstrong Whitworth and Vickers merged, Armstrong Whitworth's automotive interests were purchased by J. D. Siddeley as Armstrong Siddeley.

When Vickers and Armstrong Whitworth merged in 1927 to form Vickers-Armstrongs, Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft was bought out by J. D. Siddeley and became a separate entity.

In 2004, Armstrong merged with nearby John F. Kennedy High School, continuing to use the Armstrong name, colors and mascot, despite using the much newer and air conditioned Kennedy building.

These had been renamed Vickers Armstrong Shipbuilders in 1955, changing again to Vickers Limited Shipbuilding Group in 1968.
