August Horch ( 12 October 1868 – 3 February 1951 ) was a German engineer and automobile pioneer, the founder of the manufacturing giant which would eventually become Audi.

He was an honorary citizen of Zwickau and had a street named for his Audi cars in both Zwickau and his birthplace Winningen.

During this transition, production was also moved from Düsseldorf to Ingolstadt where the successor company Audi still has its production.

This model was the direct forerunner of the first post-war Audi, the F103.

The main difference was that the Audi used a conventional four-stroke engine.

The company has always had a close relationship with, initially, the Volkswagen ( VW ) marque, and later, the Volkswagen Group ( which also owns Audi AG ), because the first Volkswagen Beetle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

The two companies collaborated in 1969 to make the VW-Porsche 914 and 914-6, whereby the 914-6 had a Porsche engine, and the 914 had a Volkswagen engine, in 1976 with the Porsche 912E ( USA only ) and the Porsche 924, which used many Audi components, and was built at Audi's Neckarsulm factory.

At the time, Volkswagen lacked an internal research and design division, and Porsche was doing the bulk of the company's development work, per a deal that went back to the 1950s ; in keeping with this history, Porsche was contracted to develop a new sporting vehicle with the caveat that this vehicle must work with an existing VW / Audi I4 engine.

An Audi three-speed automatic was offered starting with the 1977. 5 model.

This was robust, but expensive due to some 915 internal parts, and was replaced for 1980 with a normal H-pattern Audi five-speed on all non-turbo cars.

Production was moved from the Audi plant in Neckarsulm ( where the 924 and 944 had been manufactured under contract to Porsche ), to Porsche's own factory in Zuffenhausen.

His body was recovered later that day in the trunk of a green Audi 100 on the rue Charles Péguy.

However Prost has also stated that he has no intention of racing at the famous Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race held annually near Le Mans, France due to concerns about the skill and experience of other drivers along the nature of the multiple class racing that occurs at Le Mans, a factor that was supported by Scotsman and two time LeMans winner Allan McNish's horror crash in the Audi R18 in the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Thus the Audi Quattro was born.

The body was built on the basis of Simca 1307, while longitudinal engine placement and torsion-crank rear suspension and McPherson strut front suspension was inspired by Audi 80 / 100 family, while taking into account the larger size of the Moskvitch and Lada engines.

Its platform was developed by Porsche and is shared with the Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q7.

The road car engine aspect of the business was split from the racing division following the sale of the engineering division of Cosworth to VW / Audi in September 1998 and renamed Cosworth Technology, before being acquired by Mahle GmbH in 2005.

The advent of the AWD turbo Audi Quattro gave the rear-wheel-drive, normally aspirated 190E rally car no chance of being successful and the competition car was stillborn.

Major parts ( block, crankshaft, head assembly ) were initially purchased from Audi and shipped to the U. S. where final assembly was accomplished by AMC at a plant purchased specifically for production of this engine.

The automaker's first new design in eleven years, the car was also the brand's first new model under the ownership of German parent company Audi, which is owned by Volkswagen.

For Audi in their Audi S8 5. 2 FSI quattro, the V10 was a compromise between a V12 which would be too long and suffer more internal friction due to extra cylinders and values, and a V8 which would be more compact but have larger heavier pistons and produce lower revs.

In a similar test conducted by Evo magazine, the Evolution was able to lap the Bedford Autodrome faster than an Audi RS4 and a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S.

Wolfsburg was able to ramp up production carefully: directly before Passat production started the lines were used to assemble small volumes of the car's Audi 80 sibling which had been launched a year earlier.

The UK launch promoted the sleek design, and the Daily Mail noted its low drag coefficient of 0. 36, and very impressive in 1983 with only bigger cars such as the Ford Sierra and Audi 100 able to better it.

During the break between the British Grand Prix and the Canadian Grand Prix, Montagny was able to participate in the Le Mans 24 Hours, finishing second for Pescarolo Sport behind only the dominating Audi factory R10s.

For the E65 7-Series generation, the Alpina B7 was widely credited with being able to hold its own against top performing offerings from Mercedes ( including AMG ) such as the S600 and S63 AMG, Audi ( particularly quattro's Audi S8 ), the Bentley Flying Spur, and Jaguar XJ Supercharged, while BMW's own top-of-the-line V12 760Li was considered uncompetitive.

A short time later he moved to Audi, and pursued his career through the entire company, up to and including, the Volkswagen Group boards.

Fortune stated that the first Maybach models had poor driving dynamics compared to its contemporaries from Rolls-Royce and Bentley, as " Mercedes took an aging S-class chassis and plopped an absurdly elongated body on it ... rather than develop a new car from the wheels up, as BMW did with Rolls-Royce, or cleverly use the underpinnings of an existing model like the Audi A8 for a new Bentley ".

Audi followed up the introduction of the four-door saloon in November 1968 with a two-door saloon in October 1969 and the 100 Coupé S in autumn 1970.

Despite running the Ingolstadt production line at full capacity, supply fell short of demand to such an extent that during the summer of 1970 an additional production line for Audi 100s was set up in Volkswagen's own Wolfsburg plant, which made it the first water-cooled car to be produced in Germany's ( and by some criteria the world's ) largest car plant.

The 1982 season saw the series dominated by the four-wheel-drive Audi Quattro, and with Group B regulations coming up, Talbot withdrew from the WRC.

The properties of smart fluids have been known for around sixty years, but were subject to only sporadic investigations up until the 1990s, when they were suddenly the subject of renewed interest, notably culminating with the use of an MR fluid on the suspension of the 2002 model of the Cadillac Seville STS automobile and more recently, on the suspension of the second-generation Audi TT.

In 2006, he continued racing with the Audi factory team and was part of the driving line up which won the 12 Hours of Sebring in the new Audi R10 TDI diesel, setting pole position and breaking the lap record.

The competition model ( Audi V8 DTM ) won two titles for Audio while competing against vehicles smaller and up to lighter.

The petrol-powered Audi R8 race car was replaced by the new Audi R10 TDI Diesel in 2006 ; however, the need to further develop the R10 meant that the R8 saw action in a few races leading up to Le Mans.

Audi had made the development of the Audi R10 TDI diesel public, and cars from other manufacturers and teams started to catch up in terms of on-the-track speed.

He picked up the concept again after moving to Audi, because there was a market demand for engines with more than 4 cylinders.

Overall victory went to Tom Ottey and Pam McGarvey in a Mazda 323 GTX, followed up by Jon Kemp and Brian Maxwell in an Audi 4000 Quattro and by Peter Lahm and Matt Chester in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV.

In one part of the video, the Granada pulls up next to an Audi Cabriolet convertible and Daniels says " It's got nothing to do with your ' Vorsprung durch Technik ' yer know " The driver, seemingly played by Alex James, grimaces back at him.

C4 braking system included radially ventilated disc brakes front and rear ; with diameter by thick discs, with two-piston floating Girling calipers bearing the interlocking four-ringed Audi logo, and four individual pads per caliper up front, and by discs with Lucas single-piston sliding calipers at the rear.
