Bessbrook is a village in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Bessbrook is near Newry railway station.

In the frequently segregated communities of Northern Ireland, Bessbrook is an unusually mixed village, with representation of Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic denominations.

Her brother is actor John Lynch, she has a sister, Pauline, who is a drama teacher at St. Paul's High School, Bessbrook and a brother named Seamus.

Shortly afterwards, the Specials took four Catholics from their homes in Bessbrook and Altnaveigh and killed them.

On 25 June 2007 the British Army withdrew their military presence from Bessbrook and closed all of their facilities, marking an end to British military presence in the South Armagh region.

On 5 January 1976 just after 5. 30pm, a red Ford Transit minibus was carrying sixteen textile workers home from work in Glenanne to Bessbrook.

Nine of the dead, the textile workers, were from the village of Bessbrook, while the bus driver, Robert Walker ( 46 ), was from nearby Mountnorris.

Bessbrook was founded by John Grubb Richardson in 1845 as a ' model village ', with spacious streets and squares surrounding a large linen mill owned by the Quaker Richardson family.

Armagh once had a well-developed railroad network with connections to, among others, Armagh City, Culloville, Goraghwood, Markethill, Vernersbridge, Tynan ( see History of rail transport in Ireland ) but today only Newry ( Bessbrook ), Portadown, Poyntzpass, Scarva, and Lurgan are served by rail.

Newry ( together with Bessbrook ) had a population of 27, 433 at the 2001 Census, while Newry and Mourne Council Area had a population of 87, 058.

The 2nd Bn had preceded them to Northern Ireland, first on a Spearhead deployment to South Armagh, following the Kingsmill ( Bessbrook ) Massacre in January 1975, and then to West Belfast, on an operational tour in Andersonstown in early 1977.

Sir William Siemens ( 1823 – 83 ) was briefly a Director and Siemens Bros. of London were appointed electrical engineers to the company, their representative being Dr Edward Hopkinson, who later went on to work on the Bessbrook and Newry Tramway and the City & South London Railway.

Nairac on his fourth tour was a liaison officer to the units based at Bessbrook mill.

Four of the Catholics got out at Whitecross, while the rest continued on the road to Bessbrook.

At one time, Bessbrook linen was among the finest in the world, and the linen mill provided most of the employment in the village.

On 25 June 2007, the Second Battalion Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment vacated the Army complex at Bessbrook Mill in Armagh.

Rostrevor also has two soccer clubs competing in the Newry and Mourne District Leagues, the most successful of the two being Killowen Celtic who play in the Premier Division and in 2010 were winners of the Kehoe Cars Bessbrook Cup, defeating one of the most successful teams in the area, Windmill Stars by a winning margin of 5 goals to two.

Other towns in the council area include Crossmaglen and Bessbrook in County Armagh and Warrenpoint, Rostrevor, Hilltown, Annalong and Kilkeel ( an important fishing port ) in County Down.

Today the village of Bessbrook straddles the three townlands of Maghernahely, Clogharevan and Maytown.

In 1885 the hydro-electrically powered Bessbrook and Newry Tramway opened.

Bessbrook saw some of the worst violence in the Troubles.
