Boq was transformed into the Tin Woodman when Elphaba attempted to correct a Grimmerie spell-book charm that was miscast by Nessarose ( who wanted to claim the " heart " he " lost " to Glinda ).

Elphaba becomes friends with a Munchkin boy named Boq ( son of Bfee, the Mayor of Rush Margins, which was the town in which Elphaba was born ), who develops a crush on Galinda.

Most significantly, in the musical, Glinda unwittingly sets into motion the events that lead to the Munchkin Boq becoming the Tin Woodman ( which only happens in this musical ), and Elphaba's sister Nessarose being killed by Dorothy Gale's farmhouse.

Almost five years have passed since Elphaba has seen Glinda, Boq, or any of her other friends from college and she now lives in the Emerald City, secretly involved in the movement to help free the Animals and get rid of the Wizard of Oz.

Now that she is no longer disabled, Nessarose believes that Boq will choose to stay with her of his own accord, but the Munchkin insists that he should now be free to go pursue Glinda instead, going so far as to brandish a knife in order to prevent Nessa from stopping him.

In Wicked, Boq is a Munchkin who attends Shiz University with Elphaba and Galinda ( who would grow up to become The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch respectively ).

When Boq confesses his love for Glinda, Nessarose becomes extremely angry with him.

Boq waits upon her himself, offering her fruit, nuts, cakes, and pies.

In the musical adaptation of Wicked the Tin Man is revealed to be Boq, a Munchkin whom Nessarose, the Wicked Witch of the East, fell in love with when they were at school together.

Elphaba is also the creator of the Tin Woodman ( through a spell to save Boq, who had had his heart shrunken to apparent non-existence by Nessarose ), the Scarecrow ( through a spell with which she attempts to save Fiyero from being tortured to death on her account ) and the Cowardly Lion ( the Lion Cub she rescued from the class after Doctor Dillamond's removal ); in the book the former is a result of an axe bewitched by Nessarose, and the latter's existence has nothing to do with Fiyero, other than her slight suspicion that he might indeed be her love coming back to find her, which just proves to be a paranoid delusion.

Unlike in the musical version, however, Nessarose is not infatuated with Boq, the Munchkin boy, or anyone for that matter, and lives a solitary life.

Hurt and furious, Nessarose grudgingly tries to cast a spell from the Grimmerie to make Boq lose his heart to her, determined that he should love her.

When it turns out that Elphaba had turned Boq into a Tin Man, so that he can live without a heart, a desperate Nessarose places all the blame on her older sister, and a horrified Boq runs away, leaving Nessa all on her own.

In Maguire's novel, Boq has very little interaction with Nessarose, and while he does fancy Galinda, he does not become involved with either girl.

In the musical, Boq is the love interest of Elphaba's younger sister, Nessarose ( who would later become The Wicked Witch of the East ).

However, the feeling is not mutual ; Boq only became involved with Nessarose in hopes of impressing Galinda, on whom he truly has his heart set.

When Nessarose eventually becomes the governor of Munchkinland, she uses her power to enslave Boq as her personal servant.

In Baum's novel, Boq is a rich Munchkin who provides shelter for Dorothy on her journey to the Emerald City.
