He drew on his experiences in the Burma police for the novel Burmese Days ( 1934 ) and the essays " A Hanging " ( 1931 ) and " Shooting an Elephant " ( 1936 ).

He began to write novels, including an early version of Burmese Days but nothing else survives from that period.

Blair and his sister Avril spent the summer holidays making the house habitable while he also worked on Burmese Days.

While the substance of many of Orwell's novels, particularly Burmese Days, is drawn from his personal experiences, the following are works presented as narrative documentaries, rather than being fictionalised.

He tutored a disabled child and a family of three boys during this time and wrote reviews and developed Burmese Days.

Burmese Days was several years in creation.

In the spring of 1935 Gollancz declared that he was prepared to publish Burmese Days provided Orwell was able to demonstrate it was not based on real people.

Burmese Days is set in 1920s imperial Burma, in the fictional district of Kyauktada.

( In Burmese Days Orwell defines the memsahib as " yellow and thin, scandal mongering over cocktails-living twenty years in the country without learning a word of the language.

Jeffrey Meyers, in a 1975 guide to Orwell's work, wrote of the E. M. Forster connection that, " Burmese Days was strongly influenced by A Passage to India, which was published in 1924 when Orwell was serving in Burma.

But Burmese Days is a far more pessimistic book than A Passage to India, because official failures are not redeemed by successful personal relations.

And in fact my first complete novel, Burmese Days .... is rather that kind of book.

Harpers brought out Burmese Days in America on 25 October 1934, in an edition of 2, 000 copies ;-but in February 1935, just four months after publication, the type was distributed and 976 copies were remaindered.

In Burmese, Pucwan Tārā ( pronounced " bazun taja ") is the name of a constellation comprising stars from the head and forelegs of Ursa Major ; pucwan is a general term for a crustacean, such as prawn, shrimp, crab, lobster, etc.

The Kuan Yin Temple ( Kwan Yin Si ) is a local place of worship for Burmese Chinese in Bago and serves as a Mandarin school for the local community.

For instance, the Burmese language has phonetic tone, but each of its three tones is accompanied by a distinctive phonation ( creaky, murmured or plain vowels ).

It could be argued either that the tone is incidental to the phonation, in which case Burmese would not be phonemically tonal, or that the phonation is incidental to the tone, in which case it would be considered tonal.

The Mon script is derived from Indian Brahmi script and is the source of the Burmese script.

Mon is an important language in Burmese history.

The Old Mon script, which has been dated to the 6th century, with the earliest inscriptions found in Nakhon Pathom and Saraburi ( in Thailand ), is ancestral to the Burmese script and the Tai Tham script, a liturgical script used in Northern Thailand and Laos.

The modern Mon script, however, utilises several different letters and diacritics that represent phonemes that do not exist in Burmese, such as the diacritic of the simplified medial ' l ', which is placed underneath the letter.

From 5th standard until matriculation, traditional Burmese attire is considered appropriate school uniform.

The boy uniform is a white shirt ( with a Mandarin collar or uncollared ) and a green sarong called a paso, along with Burmese sandals.
