Two genera of " geese " are only tentatively placed in the Anserinae ; they may belong to the shelducks or form a subfamily on their own: Cereopsis, the Cape Barren Goose, and Cnemiornis, the prehistoric New Zealand Goose.

Cape Barren Goose

They seem to represent an ancient lineage like the Cape Barren Goose and the Spur-winged Goose.

From the early 1970s various species of fauna were released onto the island, including mammals and birds such as emus ( from mainland Australia ) and Cape Barren Geese.

Some of the birds found in the park include: the Western Ground Parrot, the Australasian bittern, Carnaby's Cockatoo and Cape Barren Geese.

Magpie Geese, Ruddy Shelducks, Kea, Black-capped Lories and Cape Barren Geese also live in the aviary.

It also supports over 1 % of the world populations of Cape Barren Geese, Black-faced Cormorants, Pacific Gulls and Pied Oystercatchers, and sometimes of Musk Ducks, Blue-billed Ducks, Freckled Ducks, Australian Shelducks, Chestnut Teals and Banded Stilts.

These two are probably part of a very ancient radiation of Gondwanan ( often Australian ) waterfowl, including such forms as the Cape Barren Goose ( Cereopsis ), the Coscoroba Swan ( Coscoroba ), the Freckled Duck ( Stictonetta ) which once was placed in the Oxyurinae, or the pygmy geese ( Nettapus ).

The Cape Barren Goose ( Cereopsis novaehollandiae )

The species is named for Cape Barren Island, where specimens were first sighted by European explorers.

Indeed, the first bones of the New Zealand birds to be discovered were similar enough to those of the Cape Barren Goose to erroneously refer to them as " New Zealand Cape Barren Goose " (" Cereopsis " novaezeelandiae ).

The smaller population of Cape Barren Goose in Western Australia is described as a subspecies, Cereopsis novaehollandiae grisea, and named for the group of islands known as the Recherche Archipelago.

The Cape Barren Goose is long, weighs and has a wingspan ; males are somewhat larger than females.

The Cape Verde islands are a very degradated area.

Due to its proximity to the Sahara, most of the Cape Verde islands are dry, but on islands with high mountains and farther away from the coast, by orography, the humidity is much higher, giving a rainforest habitat, very degraded by the strong human presence.

The islands are an important breeding site for seabirds including the Cape Verde Shearwater and Fea's Petrel ( Pterodroma feae ), which breeds only here and in Madeira.
