Oakwood is built on land which used to be known as Chaddesden Common, It has three clusters of shops, the largest of which has all the amenities of a large village.

Chaddesden Village Centre has many amenities including a Tesco Express, Aldi, Pizza Hut and locally famous 3 Chefs Takeaway plus numerous other takeaways including Chinese, Indian and Fish and Chips, an Estate Agency, chemist, travel agent, newsagent, hairdresser, optician, two public houses and a 29 bedroom Hotel.

There is the Pentagon Island Grade Separated Junction ( GSJ ) with the A61 near Chaddesden and the Texaco Pentagon Service Station.

The area is covered by the Chaddesden ward of Derby City Council.

Chaddesden Wood, on the northern fringe of the village, is a 10 acre ( 4 ha ) designated Local Nature Reserve.

It is bordered to the north by the wards of Derwent, Chaddesden and Spondon, to the east is the City Centre, to the south are Sinfin and Chellaston and to the west the district of South Derbyshire.

It is situated on the outskirts of the city, bordering the suburb of Chaddesden, which is one of the largest council housing estates in England.

The original oak wood, from which the area is named, has been preserved as Chaddesden Wood Nature Reserve, and is maintained by the council.

This small railway was privately owned and is thought to have stretched south down to the old Chaddesden village and as far north as the old mainline just north of the suburb.

Currently Derby North constituency is made up of seven electoral wards of the City of Derby ; Abbey, Chaddesden, Darley, Derwent, Littleover, Mackworth, and Mickleover.

Chaddesden soon became the largest suburb of Derby.

The original line into Derby, through what later became the site of Chaddesden Sidings, closed in 1969.

Each week around three or four vans would be dispatched to Chaddesden sidings ( near Derby station ) where they would be connected to an express to St Pancras in London and the company's warehouse at the Granary.

Wilmot was born in Chaddesden, Derby, the son of Sir Henry Wilmot ( 4th Baronet ) and his wife Maria Mundy daughter of Edmund Mundy of Shipley Hall.

It was rebuilt by Henry Chaddesden, Archdeacon of Leicester, around 1357.

The family lived at Chaddesden Hall, which was demolished in the 1920s when the Wilmot family sold its estate.

The shopping area on Nottingham Road was developed around the same time as was Chaddesden Park Hotel.

The Wilmot family name still appears in the names of local businesses, including the Wilmot Arms Public House at the junction of Morley Road, Chaddesden Lane and Wood Road.

Public facilities in Chaddesden include a public library, Chaddesden Park primary school, the Chesapeake youth centre, and the North Chaddesden Children's Centre.
