In 1739, Richardson was asked by his friends Charles Rivington and John Osborn to write " a little volume of Letters, in a common style, on such subjects as might be of use to those country readers, who were unable to indite for themselves ".

Some of these letters appeared in the German newspapers, and an English translation was published by Charles Rivington.

He recounts how he was approached by Charles Rivington and had to be persuaded that this was the correct course.

After his death, Charles Rivington was succeeded by his two sons, John ( 1720 – 1792 ) and James ( 1724 – 1802 ).

In 1827 George ( 1801 – 1858 ) and Francis ( 1805 – 1885 ), sons of Charles Rivington, joined the firm.

The original publisher, Charles Rivington, emphasized the fact that the catalogue ( largely assembled from newspaper accounts, Admiralty Court records and a few interviews ) included stories of " the remarkable ACTIONS and ADVENTURES of the two Female Pyrates, Mary Read and Anne Bonny.

On April 26, 1709, he married Landgravine Marie Louise of Hesse-Kassel ( 1688 – 1765 ), daughter of Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel and granddaughter of Jacob Kettler, Duke of Courland.

Twenty-five were created between 1688 and 1784 by James II in exile after his dethronement, by his son James Stuart (" The Old Pretender ") and his grandson Charles Edward Stuart (" Bonny Prince Charlie ").

His second wife, whom he married in 1715, was Ulrika Eleonora, Princess of Sweden, ( 1688 – 1741 ), daughter of Charles XI of Sweden ( 1655 – 1697 ) and of Ulrike Eleonora of Denmark ( 1656 – 1693 ).

After the Revolution of 1688 which overthrew James II, there were Jacobite risings in the British Isles ; some Riponmen were jailed in February 1764 upon " suspicion of corresponding with Prince Charles Edward Stuart ".

Because of the Williamite confiscations Charles Campbell became the landowner as a grantee of estates forfeited in 1688.

The Nine Years ' War ( 1688 – 97 ) – often called the War of the Grand Alliance, the War of the Palatine Succession, or the War of the League of Augsburg – was a major war of the late 17th century fought between King Louis XIV of France, and a European-wide coalition, the Grand Alliance, led by the Anglo-Dutch Stadtholder-King William III, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, King Charles II of Spain, Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, and the major and minor princes of the Holy Roman Empire.

Religiously inspired revolts and rebellions followed, in which, indeed, one king, Charles I ( 1625 – 1649 ) lost his life, and his son James II lost his crown and fled to France ( 1685 – 1688 ).

These 105 masterpieces, made under the artistic direction of Charles Le Brun, were never installed, as Louis XIV moved the court to Versailles in 1688.

His best plays are Epsom Wells ( 1672 ), for which Sir Charles Sedley wrote a prologue, and the Squire of Alsatia ( 1688 ).

In this revolution, James II ( 1633 – 1701, reigning 1685-1688 ), a Catholic, a younger brother to Charles II, and a strong believer in the Divine right of kings, was forced to flee to France in 1688 by the Protestant Parliamentarian forces.

Sacheverell compared the Gunpowder Plot not to 1688 but to the date of the execution of Charles I, 30 January 1649, as two days of the " rage and bloodthirstiness of both the popish and fanatick enemies of our Church and Government ... These TWO DAYS indeed are but one united proof and visible testimonial of the same dangerous and rebellious principles these confederates in iniquity maintain ".
