In 1738, while hearing Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans read at St. Botolph Church on Aldersgate Street in London, John Wesley famously felt his heart " strangely warmed ", a conversion experience which is often seen as the beginning of Methodism.

In 1988, in response to the calls for a new design, LET released a masterplan of numerous buildings with a wide pedestrianised street leading to St Martin's Church.

As part of the renovation, the square has been pedestrianised, forty-six Secession era-style street lights added, and a singing fountain is being built in front of the Reformed Church.

Transamerica moved its headquarters to the new building from across the street, where it used to be based in another flatiron-shaped building now occupied by the Church of Scientology of San Francisco.

* St. Joseph's Catholic Church Hall, located on main street immediately adjacent to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, this facility has been used by area residents for weddings, wakes, celebrations, and meetings since its construction in the early 1960s.
