This episode is also found in Clement of Alexandria, in Stephen of Byzantium ( Kopai and Argunnos ), and in Propertius, III with minor variations.

Clement of Alexandria ( Stromata, ii, 20 ) also makes Barnabas one of the Seventy Disciples that are mentioned in the Gospel of Luke 10: 1ff.

Around 190 AD under the leadership of the scholar Pantanaeus, the school of Alexandria became an important institution of religious learning, where students were taught by scholars such as Athenagoras, Clement, Didymus, and the native Egyptian Origen, who was considered the father of theology and who was also active in the field of commentary and comparative Biblical studies.

It is a record of the trial of the Templars and shows that Clement absolved the Templars of all heresies in 1308 before formally disbanding the Order in 1312, as did another Chinon Parchment dated 20 August 1308 addressed to Philip IV of France, also mentioning that all Templars that had confessed to heresy were " restored to the Sacraments and to the unity of the Church ".

It was also the title of a play by Menander, which we know of from book seven ( concerning Alexandria ) of Strabo's 17 volume Geography, and quotations of Menander by Clement of Alexandria and Stobaeus that relate to marriage.

" On the other hand Clement Greenberg called Immanuel Kant ( 1724 – 1804 ) " the first real Modernist ", though he also wrote, " What can be safely called Modernism emerged in the middle of the last century — and rather locally, in France, with Baudelaire in literature and Manet in painting, and perhaps with Flaubert, too, in prose fiction.

He returned to France as a legate for Urban IV and also for his successor Pope Clement IV in 1264 – 1269 and again in 1274 – 1279 under Pope Gregory X.

Pope Clement V, born Raymond Bertrand de Got ( also occasionally spelled de Guoth and de Goth ) ( c. 1264 – 20 April 1314 ) was Pope from 1305 to his death.

Philip IV was the force behind this ruthless move, but it has also tarnished the historical reputation of Clement V. From the very day of Clement V's coronation, the king falsely charged the Templars with heresy, immorality and abuses, and the scruples of the Pope were compromised by a growing sense that the burgeoning French State might not wait for the Church, but would proceed independently.

Clement V's pontificate was also a disastrous time for Italy.

Clement VI died in December 1352, leaving the reputation of " a fine gentleman, a prince munificent to profusion, a patron of the arts and learning, but no saint " ( Gregorovius ; see also Gibbon, chap.

The bull also alleged that Jews in the Papal States had engaged in usury and exploited the hospitality of Clement VIII's predecessors " who, in order to lead them from their darkness to knowledge of the true faith, deemed it opportune to use the clemency of Christian piety towards them " ( alluding to Christiana pietas ).

With the bull Cum Hebraeorum malitia a few days later, Clement VIII also forbade the reading of the Talmud.

Clement X also had declared Venerable one of the famous spanish mystics, Sister María de Jesús de Ágreda.

Clement XI also was key in the decision to allow cats back into Christian homes after they were seen as overtly Pagan symbols.

Coscia fled from the city in the circumstance, being excommunicated under the new Pope Clement XII.

However both Margaret and her new husband were immediately excommunicated by the new Pope Clement VI in 1342.

Under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement V disbanded the Order in 1312.

King Philip IV of France ( 1268 – 1314 ) In 1305, the new Pope Clement V, based in France, sent letters to both the Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay and the Hospitaller Grand Master Fulk de Villaret to discuss the possibility of merging the two Orders.

It was generally agreed that the charges were false, but Clement sent King Philip IV of France a written request for assistance in the investigation.

According to legend, he called out from the flames that both Pope Clement and King Philip would soon meet him before God.

Pope Clement died only a month later, and King Philip died in a hunting accident before the end of the year.

The current position of the Roman Catholic Church is that the medieval persecution of the Knights Templar was unjust, that nothing was inherently wrong with the Order or its Rule, and that Pope Clement was pressed into his actions by the magnitude of the public scandal and by the dominating influence of King Philip IV, who was Clement's relative.

He was sent to England in 1265 by Pope Clement IV to mediate between King Henry III of England and his barons, and to preach the Crusades.

Pope Clement IV sent him and three other cardinals to invest Charles of Anjou as King of Sicily at Rome on 28 July 1265.

Immediately after his election, King Henry and the new Pope moved to Rome, where Clement crowned Henry III as Holy Roman Emperor.

Despite initially holding an ambiguous neutrality, Clement was later forced to name Charles, Archduke of Austria, as King of Spain, since the imperial army had conquered much of northern Italy and was threatening Rome itself ( January 1709 ).

On 8 November 1760, Clement XIII issued a Papal bull Quantum ornamenti, which approved the request of King Charles III of Spain to invoke the Immaculate Conception as the Patroness of the Spanish Kingdom, along with its eastern and western territories, while also maintaining Saint James the Greater be given a distinguished honor as co-patron.

Pope Clement V canonized Celestine in 1313 at the urging of King Philip IV of France, who saw it as an opportunity to demean Pope Boniface VIII, whom Philip despised.

In 1601, Maffeo, through the influence of an uncle who had become apostolic protonotary, was able to secure from Clement VIII the appointment as papal legate to the court of King Henry IV of France.

Joseph Clement was not only the candidate of Emperor Leopold I ( 1658 – 1705 ) but of all European rulers, with the exception of the King of France and his supporter, King James II of England ( 1685 – 88 ).

King Louis XV, dissatisfied with Clement XIII's action in regard to the Duke of Parma, occupied the Papal States from 1768 to 1774 and substituted French institutions for those in force with the approval of the people of Avignon ; a French party grew up which, after the sanguinary massacres of La Glacière between the adherents of the Papacy and the Republicans ( 16 – 17 October 1791 ), carried all before it, and induced the Constituent Assembly to decree the union of Avignon and the Comtat ( comital district ) Venaissin with France on 14 September 1791.

He credits James Goodby ( of the Brookings Institution ) with tracing what he considers the earliest known English-language use soon after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ( although it is not quite verbatim ): a communique from a 15 November 1945, meeting of Harry Truman, Clement Attlee and Mackenzie King ( probably drafted by Vannevar Bush – or so Bush claimed in 1970 ) referred to " weapons adaptable to mass destruction ".

Pope Clement XIII had recognised James as King of England, Scotland, and Ireland as " James III and VIII " but did not give Charles the same recognition.

In Ferrara, the death of Azzo VIII d ' Este without legitimate heirs ( 1308 ) encouraged Clement to bring Ferrara under his direct rule: for only nine years, however, was it governed by his appointed vicar, Robert d ' Anjou, King of Naples, before the citizens recalled the Este from exile ( 1317 ); interdiction and excommunications were in vain: in 1332 John XXII was obliged to name three Este brothers as his vicars in Ferrara.

On September 30, 1834 Semper obtained a post as Professor of Architecture at the Königlichen Akademie der bildenden Künste ( today called the Hochschule ) in Dresden thanks largely to the efforts and support of his former teacher Franz Christian Gau and swore an oath of allegiance to the King ( formerly Elector ) of Saxony, Anthony Clement.
