The area of present-day La Salle County was occupied by the Coahuiltecan Indians until the 18th century, when they were squeezed out by the Spanish from the south and the Apache from the north.

The establishment of Spanish settlements in Northern Nuevo León, was often slowed down by attacks of native Americans, of Coahuiltecan origin such as Alazapas, Cuanales, Gualeguas, among others.

The Coahuiltecan language family was proposed to include all the languages of the region, including Karankawa and Tonkawa.

In John Wesley Powell's 1891 classification of North American languages, Comecrudo was grouped together with the Cotoname and Coahuilteco languages into a family called Coahuiltecan.
