Birds with a Gondwanan history include the flightless ratites ( the Emu and Southern Cassowary ), megapodes ( the Malleefowl and Australian Brush-turkey ), and a huge group of endemic parrots, order Psittaciformes.

The most common of these, the Southern Cassowary, is the third tallest and second heaviest living bird, smaller only than the ostrich and emu.

The Southern Cassowary ( Casuarius casuarius ) also known as Double-wattled Cassowary, Australian Cassowary or Two-wattled Cassowary, is a large flightless black bird.
