In 1260 Brian O ' Neill ( Brian Ua Néill ), King of Tír Eoghain ( Tyrone ) and who had been acknowledged as High King of Ireland by Hugh O ' Conor of Connacht and Tadhg O ' Brien of Thomond marched to Downpatrick, a centre of English settlement, and, allied with a Connacht force under Hugh O ' Conor, fought the foreigners in the Battle of Down.

When he grew up, Shane ( who is remembered as an Diomais, " the Proud ") claimed to be The O ' Neill ( in Irish: Uí Neíll ), and there was civil strife among the Cenell Eoghain ; Shane was victorious, Ferdoragh was killed, Conn was driven out of Tyrone, and died in the Irish Pale, the area of Ireland directly governed by the English.

Predating the formation of County Donegal by centuries, the area was named Inis Eoghain ( the Island of Eoghan ) after Eógan mac Néill, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages ( Niall Naoigeallach, a High King of Ireland ), whose name was also used for Tyrone ( Irish: Tír Eoghain ).

Inis Eoghain is also the ancient homeland of the Mac Lochlainn clan ( descended from the tribe of Eoghan ), a clan that grew so formidable that they eventually came under siege by a Limerick King, who came north to Aileach, and ordered the destruction of Aileach fort, and that each soldier was to carry away a stone from the fort in order to prevent its rebuilding.

Eoghan, King of Tír Eoghain, and Prince of Inis Eoghain is buried at St. Patrick's Church in Iskaheen, Innishowen, Donegal.

The name Craggaunowen derives from its Irish name Creagán Eoghain ( Owen's little rocky hill ).
