Eisenstein returned to teaching and was assigned to direct Richard Wagner's Die Walküre at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Richard Wagner's epic series of operas, Der Ring des Nibelungen, is sometimes referred to as a trilogy even though it consists of four works: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung.

The Ring proper begins with Die Walküre and ends with Götterdämmerung, with Rheingold as a prelude.

Wagner called Das Rheingold a Vorabend or " Preliminary Evening ", and Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung were subtitled First Day, Second Day and Third Day, respectively, of the trilogy proper.

One factor that helped Wagner choose which symphony to accept the dedication of was that the Third contains quotations from Wagner's music dramas, such as Die Walküre and Lohengrin.

In parallel with this Wagner started work on a fair copy of the score on 15 February, a task he completed on 26 September 1854, by which time he had also started work on the sketches of Die Walküre.

Although Die Walküre is the second of the Ring operas, it was the third in order of conception.

Wagner intermingled development of the text of these last two planned operas, i. e. Die Walküre, originally entitled Siegmund und Sieglinde: der Walküre Bestrafung ( Siegmund and Sieglinde: the Valkyrie's Punishment ) and what became Das Rheingold.

There he worked on the prose draft of Die Walküre, an extended description of the story including dialogue between 17 and 26 May 1852 and the verse draft between 1 June and 1 July.

Other early sketches for Die Walküre were made in the summer of 1852.

In music, valkyries play a major role in " Die Walküre " ( 1870 ) by Richard Wagner ( the second of the four operas that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen ), in which the " Ride of the Valkyries " begins Act III.

Siegmund and his twin sister Sieglinde reconnect and fall in love in Die Walküre ( The Valkyrie ), and Siegmund pulls the sword from the tree.
