Even as Elizabeth rebukes the hawks ( privateers ) in her council ( both Walsingham and Sir Francis Drake ), with hopes of peace ( encouraged by Cecil, who is now Lord Burghley ), the Spanish Armada appears on the horizons of England.

The commission, under William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, Francis Walsingham, and Drake, concluded that there was no undue corruption, and that the Queen's Navy was in first-rate condition.

In 1960, Cornell University astronomer Frank Drake performed the first modern SETI experiment, named " Project Ozma ", after the Queen of Oz in L. Frank Baum's fantasy books.

* June 17 – Sir Francis Drake, during his circumnavigation of the world, lands in what is now California, which he claims for Queen Elizabeth I.

Deptford and the docks are associated with the knighting of Sir Francis Drake by Queen Elizabeth I aboard the Golden Hind, the legend of Sir Walter Raleigh laying down his cape for Elizabeth, Captain James Cook's third voyage aboard Resolution, and the mysterious murder of Christopher Marlowe in a house along Deptford Strand.

Among people associated with Deptford are Christopher Marlowe, who was murdered at Deptford Strand ; diarist John Evelyn ( 1620 – 1706 ) who lived at Sayes Court, and had Peter the Great ( 1672 – 1725 ) as a guest for about three months in 1698 ; and Sir Francis Drake who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I aboard the Golden Hind in Deptford Docks.

During his circumnavigation of the globe ( 1577 – 1580 ), in which he was ordered to destroy the Spanish flotillas in the New World and plunder settlements, Sir Francis Drake landed on the western coast of North America and claimed the area for Queen Elizabeth I as New Albion.

Upon his return to England on 4 April 1581, Francis Drake was knighted by the French Ambassador on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I for his deeds against the Spanish during the circumnavigational voyage.

Only years later, after England's destruction of the Spanish Armada in 1588 ( in which Drake played a significant role ), did Queen Elizabeth allow an official account of Drake's voyage by Richard Hakluyt to be published — though with many of the details obscured.

However, Drake was always uneasy with the misrepresentations in the " official " account, and in 1592, he wrote to Queen Elizabeth in reference to " the certain truth concealed, as I have thought it necessary myself.

Drake and Queen Elizabeth, they argue, falsified the location because he mistakenly thought he had discovered the North West Passage when he found, and sailed into, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which today separates Vancouver Island, British Columbia from the mainland Olympic Peninsula of Washington state.

On October 11, 1930, John Maynard Keynes was arguing in an article for deficit spending to alleviate the Depression and mentioned that Queen Elizabeth had invested Drake's loot — which Drake had given to the crown — for the benefit of the country.

In 1586, Queen Elizabeth I of England, supported the Protestant cause in the Netherlands and France, and Sir Francis Drake launched attacks against Spanish merchants in the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, along with a particularly aggressive attack on the port of Cadiz.

Drake named the new land Nova Albion or New Albion and claimed it for Queen Elizabeth I.

John Owen had started writing epigrams while at Winchester – indeed, education there was largely devoted to the production of them – and his were good enough by the time he reached 16 years of age to be used in a ceremony held when Queen Elizabeth I paid a state visit to Sir Francis Drake on his ship at Deptford, on his return from sailing around the world.

According to research by Sam Bawlf, it could be that Sir Francis Drake made first contact with them in 1579, on a secret expedition ordered by Queen Elizabeth I.

The Drake Hotel on Queen Street West in Toronto, Ontario, Canada near Parkdale, was opened in 1890 as " Small's Hotel ".

Drake's real mission was to interfere with Spanish treasure fleets in the New World ; whether he proceeded with full knowledge and sanction of Queen Elizabeth I, and whether his original intent was the circumnavigation of the globe are still topics of scholarly debate ( see Kelsey, " Sir Francis Drake: the Queen's Pirate.

Doughty next demanded that Drake show his commission from the Queen allowing him such jurisdiction, which Drake again refused, to which lawyer and friend of Doughty, Leonard Vicary, responded, " This is not lawe nor agriable to justice.

The script originally had Victoria refer to Sir Francis Drake, until Riddell pointed out that this would have been incorrect for the reference the Queen was making.

Amateur stations made up of Drake gear were used on a number of record-breaking hot air balloon flights, the RMS Queen Mary, and the Rutan Voyager.

Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581.

In 1585, Drake married Elizabeth Sydenham — born circa 1562, the only child of Sir George Sydenham, of Combe Sydenham, who was the High Sheriff of Somerset.

With the success of the Panama isthmus raid, in 1577 Elizabeth I of England sent Drake to start an expedition against the Spanish along the Pacific coast of the Americas.

After this passage, the Pelican was pushed south and discovered an island which Drake called Elizabeth Island.

During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century between the Catholic Habsburg Dynasty and the newly Protestant states, England under Elizabeth I built up a strong naval force, designed to carry out long range privateering or piracy missions against the Spanish Empire, exemplified by the exploits of Francis Drake.

There is also a record of an Elizabeth Aguirre of Petersfield, Hampshire ( died 1665 ), who was the second wife of Josias White ( 1573 – 1622 ) of Hornchurch, Essex, brother of John White the ' Patriarch of Dorchester ', and son of a John White of Stanton St John, Oxfordshire ( 1540 – before September 30, 1618 ), who afterwards married a Francis Drake ( 1573 – 1634 ) of Walton-on-Thames, Surrey – a first cousin once removed of Sir Francis Drake ( 1540 – 1596 ) the famous explorer.

At the end of the English Civil War Lady Eleanor Drake was joined at her Devon home, Ashe House in the parish of Musbury, by her third daughter Elizabeth, and Elizabeth's husband, Winston Churchill.
