All of what is known today as Atlantic County was once called Egg Harbor Township, the eastern half of the original County of Gloucester.

Named as an official district as early as 1693, it was bounded on the north by the Little Egg Harbor River ( now known as the Mullica River ), and on the south by the Great Egg Harbor River and its southern branch the Tuckahoe River.

It runs from an intersection with U. S. Route 9 ( US 9 ) and the Garden State Parkway in Upper Township, Cape May County to an intersection with US 30 and County Route 563 ( CR 563 ) in Egg Harbor City, Atlantic County.

In 1917, what is now Route 50 was designated a part of pre-1927 Route 14, a route that was to run from Cape May to Egg Harbor City.

It is composed mostly of a series of four-lane undivided bridges over Great Egg Harbor Bay from Ocean City to Somers Point known as the Howard S. Stainton Memorial Causeway, also known as the Ninth Street Bridge.

In the 1953 New Jersey state highway renumbering, Route 52 was designated to run from the Ocean City side of the Great Egg Harbor causeway north to U. S. Route 9 in Somers Point.

What is now the City of Absecon was originally incorporated as a town by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 29, 1872, from portions of Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township.

Since 1837, ten municipalities have separated from the original Egg Harbor Township, including Atlantic City ( 1854 ), Absecon ( 1872 ), South Atlantic City ( now Margate ) ( 1885 ), Somers Point ( 1886 ), Pleasantville ( 1888 ), Linwood ( 1889 ), Longport ( 1898 ), Brigantine ( 1903 ), Ventnor ( 1903 ) and Northfield ( 1905 ).

The building currently home to the Little Egg Harbor Community Center on Calabreeze Way was originally a shop functioning as part of the pre-fabrication process.

In 2002, it was sold to the Township of Little Egg Harbor and is currently to the township Community Center.

The Egg Harbor City School District is responsible for education of public school children in pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

Students in public school for grades 9-12 attend Cedar Creek High School, located in Egg Harbor City, which opened in September 2010 and serves students from Egg Harbor City, Mullica Township, Port Republic and portions of Washington Township.

The High School is part of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District, a regional high school district serving the constituent districts of Egg Harbor City, Galloway Township, Hamilton Township and Mullica Township, together with the districts of the City of Port Republic and Washington Township ( in Burlington County ) whose students attend as part of sending / receiving relationships.
