Free software and open-source are two similar categories of software licensing but which criteria of inclusion has open source including a few more licenses than is allowed under the free software definition.

The group adopted the Open Source Definition for open-source software, based on the Debian Free Software Guidelines.

Free / open-source software and shareware are similar in that they can be obtained and used without monetary cost.

Free / open-source software is usually compatible with the strict Association of Software Professionals shareware guidelines.

Free open-source permissive licenses:
