Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm ( also Karl ; 4 January 1785 – 20 September 1863 ) was a German philologist, jurist and mythologist.

This situation was resolved due to the efforts of Cyrus Adler, professor of Semitic languages at Johns Hopkins University and founder of the Jewish Publication Society, who convinced a number of wealthy German Reform Jews including Jacob Schiff, David and Simon Guggenheim, Mayer Sulzberger, and Louis Marshall, to contribute $ 500, 000 to the faltering JTS.

Key contributions were made by the Danish scholars Rasmus Rask and Karl Verner and the German scholar Jacob Grimm.

Jacob Grimm in his Deutsches Wörterbuch deplored the " unhochdeutsch " form Elf, borrowed " unthinkingly " from the English, and Tolkien was inspired by Grimm to recommend reviving the genuinely German form in his Guide to the Names in The Lord of the Rings ( 1967 ) and Elb, Elben was consequently reintroduced in the 1972 German translation of The Lord of the Rings.

Jacob Grimm lectured on legal antiquities, historical grammar, literary history, and diplomatics, explained Old German poems, and commented on the Germania of Tacitus.

The Brothers Grimm ( or Die Gebrüder Grimm ), Jacob ( January 4, 1785 – September 20, 1863 ) and Wilhelm Grimm ( February 24, 1786 – December 16, 1859 ), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, and authors who together collected folklore.

In 1835 Jacob published the well-regarded German Mythology ( Deutsche Mythologie ); Wilhelm continued to edit and prepare for publication the third edition of Kinder-und Hausmärchen.

Jacob began his own research on German legal traditions and the history of the German language, published in the late 1840s and early 1850s, while Wilhelm produced new editions of the Hausmärchen and research in medieval literature.

Grimm traces the etymology of the name to * balþaz, whence Gothic balþs, Old English bald, Old High German pald, all meaning " bold, brave ".

), which shows association with " day ", possibly with Day personified as a deity which, Grimm points out, would agree with the meaning " shining one, white one, a god " derived from the meaning of Baltic baltas, further adducing Slavic Belobog and German Berhta.

Scholars of ballads are often divided into two camps, the ‘ communalists ’ who, following the line established by the German scholar Johann Gottfried Herder ( 1744 – 1803 ) and the Brothers Grimm, argue that ballads arose by a combined communal effort and did not have a single author, and ‘ individualists ’, following the thinking of English collector Cecil Sharp, who assert that there was a single original author.

The Brothers Grimm ( 1785 – 1863 & 1786 – 1859 ) not only wrote the popular Grimm's Fairy Tales, but were among the founding fathers of German philology and German studies.

The Brothers Grimm identified Hengist with Aschanes, mythical first King of the Saxons, in their notes for legend number 413 of their German Legends.

Such derivations are today proposed only by a minority since being refuted by Grimm, who was skeptical of theories proposing non-Germanic origins for German folklore traditions.

The first definite impulse came from the lectures of Friedrich Karl von Savigny, the celebrated investigator of Roman law, who, as Wilhelm Grimm himself says in the preface to the Deutsche Grammatik ( German Grammar ), first taught him to realize what it meant to study any science.

The two men became personally acquainted, and it was in Savigny's well-stocked library that Grimm first turned over the leaves of Bodmer's edition of the Old German minnesingers and other early texts, and felt an eager desire to penetrate further into the obscurities and half-revealed mysteries of their language.

Even Grimm himself did not at first intend to include all the languages in his Grammar, but he soon found that Old High German postulated Gothic, and that the later stages of German could not be understood without the help of other West Germanic varieties including English, and that the rich literature of Scandinavia could not be ignored either.

It concerns the correspondence of consonants in the older Indo-European, and Low Saxon and High German languages, and was first fully stated by Grimm in the second edition of the first part of his grammar.

Grimm was adamant on one subject, however ; he wanted the Danish duchy of Holstein to be under German control.
