Carl Barks ( March 27, 1901 – August 25, 2000 ) was an American Disney Studio illustrator and comic book creator, who invented Duckburg and many of its inhabitants, such as Scrooge McDuck ( 1947 ), Gladstone Gander ( 1948 ), the Beagle Boys ( 1951 ), The Junior Woodchucks ( 1951 ), Gyro Gearloose ( 1952 ), Cornelius Coot ( 1952 ), Flintheart Glomgold ( 1956 ), John D. Rockerduck ( 1961 ) and Magica De Spell ( 1961 ).

As Don Rosa explained it, he was just "(...) turning that old Pertwillaby Papers adventure back into the story it originally was in my head, starring Scrooge, Donald, the nephews, and Flintheart Glomgold.

Glomgold was originally created in 1956 by the legendary Scrooge McDuck artist and creator Carl Barks, the creator of much of the Duck universe.

To avoid connections to South African issues that were then a cause of worldwide attention and concern ( see apartheid ) his origin was changed from South African to Scottish to match that of Scrooge, which led Glomgold to have Scotland-style names in other countries ( see below ).

According to the story Whatever Happened to Scrooge McDuck ?, Rockerduck ( as well as Flintheart Glomgold ) was made bankrupt by Donald Duck, after the latter had inherited Scrooge's fortune and turned it into a charity company.

The only exception was the episode " In Like Blunt ", which featured cameo appearances by the Beagle Boys, Flintheart Glomgold, and Magica De Spell.

While the comics originally depicted Glomgold as a native of South Africa, his origin was changed to Scottish descent just like Scrooge.

If the lost treasure of McDuck was found, Scrooge also reveals that he hid it from Glomgold by putting it under his hat.

Examples of such stories are Of Ducks and Dimes and Destinies, when she travels in time to steal the dime in the very same day Scrooge earns it and gives it back after realizing that by preventing Scrooge from owning the dime, she would turn it into a coin that never belonged to him, or A Little Something Special, when she teams up with Flintheart Glomgold and the Beagle Boys in a plan made by Blackheart Beagle.

In the 1988 DuckTales comic book story " The Smart Nephew " by Bob Gregory, Cosme Quartieri and Jorge Sanchez, another nephew of Glomgold appears: the smart and brave Junior.

In a two part episode " The Golden Goose " Glomgold almost beats Scrooge at being the world's richest duck with the help of the Golden Goose-until he gets turned into gold himself ; in the series finale, Glomgold makes one last attempt to get richer than Scrooge by sending the metal mites to eat whole money from Scrooge's bin.

Glomgold almost succeeds when Fenton Crackshell stopped the metal mites and the last ones retrieved by Dijon spread in Glomgold's office.

( where Rockerduck and Glomgold both make a cameo in a future vision that shows both of them having been made bankrupt by Donald's Duck charity company ).

Inspired to discover the hidden treasure left by Fergus, Scrooge starts an expedition to find the missing pieces, unaware that his rival Flintheart Glomgold is also after the lost treasure of McDuck.

After all five main stages are cleared, Webby is kidnapped by Glomgold and held for ransom on the pirate ship in the Bermuda Triangle.

According to Barks, he intended to create her as another recurring antagonist for Scrooge, in addition to The Beagle Boys and Flintheart Glomgold.

The Beagle Boys usually operate on their own, but collaborated with Magica De Spell in the 1963 Barks story Isle of the Golden Geese, and again in the 1997 Don Rosa story A Little Something Special where they also teamed up with Flintheart Glomgold.

This is often ignored in other stories to be able to have the rivals meet on a daily basis as in the case of Scrooge's other rival, Flintheart Glomgold ( who in the Barks stories lives in South Africa ) with John primarily managing his activities from a large business building he owns in Duckburg, and the three characters sitting at the same table in the Billionaires ' Club of the city.

Because Scrooge officially meets Glomgold for the first time in ' The second richest Duck ' in 1956, Don Rosa makes sure Glomgold's name is never mentioned in his tale.

Don Rosa also revealed in at least two stories another thing that makes Flintheart a counterpart to Scrooge: the Number One Rand, the first coin Flintheart Glomgold ever earned ( or stole ).

Scrooge has always been a somewhat bitter character, but his misanthropic thoughts in this first story are probably less characteristic of Scrooge than those of his rival Flintheart Glomgold: " Here I sit in this big lonely dump, waiting for Christmas to pass!

Since then Flintheart Glomgold has appeared in more than 100 Egmont stories, some of which depict him as an influential member of Duckburg's Billionaires Club ( which also includes Scrooge and John D. Rockerduck ).

He surrounded Donald Duck and nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie with a cast of eccentric and colorful characters, such as the aforementioned Scrooge McDuck, the wealthiest duck in the world ; Gladstone Gander, Donald's obscenely lucky cousin ; inventor Gyro Gearloose ; the persistent Beagle Boys ; the sorceress Magica De Spell ; Scrooge's rivals Flintheart Glomgold and John D. Rockerduck ; Daisy's nieces April, May and June ; Donald's neighbor Jones, and The Junior Woodchucks organization.

Magica makes a cameo appearance in the Darkwing Duck episode " In Like Blunt " along with the Beagle Boys and Flintheart Glomgold, among the bidders for the secret S. H. U. S. H.

Glomgold is one of Scrooge's main rivals along with the Beagle Boys, Magica De Spell, and John D. Rockerduck, and also holds the title of being The Second Richest Duck in the World where Scrooge is the richest.

In the Disney series Darkwing Duck episode " In Like Blunt ", Glomgold makes a cameo appearance-along with the Beagle Boys and Magica DeSpell-as a bidder for the secret S. H. U. S. H.

Scrooge's nemesis in the show is Flintheart Glomgold, who always tries to devise plans to unseat Scrooge McDuck from his " Richest Duck in the World " title.

Flintheart Glomgold is a fictional character in Disney comic books-a Scottish-South African white duck usually portrayed as a ruthless villain, a corrupt business tycoon, and an antagonist to Scrooge McDuck.

In Lars Jensen and Vicar's comic book story " Happy Birthday, Flintheart Glomgold ", Glomgold's nephew Slackjaw Snorehead is introduced.

Since Glomgold gets Scrooge's name, some fans could think he's more interested in defeating and humiliating Scrooge as a revenge for getting imprisoned rather than becoming the world's richest duck.

To make things worse for Glomgold, Magica takes the Beagle Boys with her the Valley of Limpopo and they carry all they can of Flintheart's cash.
