Carl Barks ( March 27, 1901 – August 25, 2000 ) was an American Disney Studio illustrator and comic book creator, who invented Duckburg and many of its inhabitants, such as Scrooge McDuck ( 1947 ), Gladstone Gander ( 1948 ), the Beagle Boys ( 1951 ), The Junior Woodchucks ( 1951 ), Gyro Gearloose ( 1952 ), Cornelius Coot ( 1952 ), Flintheart Glomgold ( 1956 ), John D. To avoid connections to South African issues that were then a cause of worldwide attention and concern ( see apartheid ) his origin was changed from South African to Scottish to match that of Scrooge, which led Glomgold to have Scotland-style names in other countries ( see below ).
According to the story Whatever Happened to Scrooge McDuck ?, Rockerduck ( as well as Flintheart Glomgold ) was made bankrupt by Donald Duck, after the latter had inherited Scrooge's fortune and turned it into a charity company.
The only exception was the episode " In Like Blunt ", which featured cameo appearances by the Beagle Boys, Flintheart Glomgold, and Magica De Spell.
While the comics originally depicted Glomgold as a native of South Africa, his origin was changed to Scottish descent just like Scrooge.

In the 1988 DuckTales comic book story " The Smart Nephew " by Bob Gregory, Cosme Quartieri and Jorge Sanchez, another nephew of Glomgold appears: the smart and brave Junior.

Glomgold and Barks
According to Barks, he intended to create her as another recurring antagonist for Scrooge, in addition to The Beagle Boys and Flintheart Glomgold.
The Beagle Boys usually operate on their own, but collaborated with Magica De Spell in the 1963 Barks story Isle of the Golden Geese, and again in the 1997 Don Rosa story A Little Something Special where they also teamed up with Flintheart Glomgold.
This is often ignored in other stories to be able to have the rivals meet on a daily basis as in the case of Scrooge's other rival, Flintheart Glomgold ( who in the Barks stories lives in South Africa ) with John primarily managing his activities from a large business building he owns in Duckburg, and the three characters sitting at the same table in the Billionaires ' Club of the city.

Because Scrooge officially meets Glomgold for the first time in ' The second richest Duck ' in 1956, Don Rosa makes sure Glomgold's name is never mentioned in his tale.
Don Rosa also revealed in at least two stories another thing that makes Flintheart a counterpart to Scrooge: the Number One Rand, the first coin Flintheart Glomgold ever earned ( or stole ).
