A wealthy merchant of Persia was made of Darkhan by Ghazan ( 1271 – 1304 ) for his service during the early defeat of the Ilkhan.

In 1271, Marco Polo visited the Armenian harbour of Ayas and commented favourably about Leo's reign and the abundance of the country, although he mentions his military forces were rather demoralized:

Marco Polo visited Khotan between 1271 and 1275 and remarked that the people were " all followers of Mahommet.

Pagspa's diaries for 1271 mention a foreign friend of Kublai Khan, who was quite possibly one of the elder Polos or even Marco Polo, although, unfortunately, no name is given.

Niccolò, Marfeo, and Marco Polo made two voyages in 1260 and 1271, and in 1294 the missionary John of Monte Corvino made a similar journey for Pope Nicholas IV.
