It is located on The Mound in central Edinburgh, in a neoclassical building designed by William Henry Playfair, and first opened to the public in 1859.

The county was formed on March 3, 1852 and named after the Weber River, which in turn was named for John Henry Weber ( 1779 – 1859 ), a fur trapper and trader in the area in the mid-1820s.

William H. Bonney ( born William Henry McCarty, Jr. c. November 23, 1859 – c. July 14, 1881 ), better known as Billy the Kid but also known as Henry Antrim, was a 19th-century American gunman who participated in the Lincoln County War and became a frontier outlaw in the American Old West.

He was the third son and seventh child of John Henry Parnell ( 1811 – 1859 ), wealthy Anglo-Irish landowner, and his American wife Delia Tudor Stewart ( 1816 – 1898 ) of Bordentown, New Jersey, daughter of the American naval hero, Admiral Charles Stewart ( 1778-1869 ) ( the stepson of one of George Washington's bodyguards ).

In 1813, Commodore David Porter claimed Nuku Hiva for the United States, but the United States Congress never ratified that claim, and in 1842, France, following a successful military operation on behalf of a native chief ( named Iotete ) who claimed to be king of the whole of the island of Tahuata, took possession of the whole group, establishing a settlement ( abandoned in 1859 ) on Nuku Hiva.

David Cox ( 29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859 ) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of impressionism.

In 1859 Richard Thornton completed the first studies of coal occurrence in the Tete Province as part of an exhibition under Dr. David Livingstone.

After a period as lighthouse inspector and at Charlestown Navy Yard, he served on the, 1859 – 1861, then took command of the steam-gunboat, serving with David Farragut on the Mississippi River, was promoted to commander on 16 July 1862, and given command of the steam-sloop blockading Mobile Bay.
