One of the first individuals diagnosed with multiple personalities to be scientifically studied was Clara Norton Fowler, under the pseudonym Christine Beauchamp ; American neurologist Morton Prince studied Fowler between 1898 and 1904, describing her case study in his 1906 monograph, Dissociation of a Personality.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley, GCB, born John Rowlands ( 28 January 1841 – 10 May 1904 ), was a Welsh journalist and explorer famous for his exploration of Africa and his search for David Livingstone.

His grave, in the churchyard of St. Michael's Church in Pirbright, Surrey, is marked by a large piece of granite inscribed with the words " Henry Morton Stanley, Bula Matari, 1841 – 1904, Africa ".

Nevertheless he had established his name internationally in the field, Morton Prince for example stating in 1904 that " certain problems in subconscious automatism will always be associated with the names of Breuer and Freud in Germany, Janet and Alfred Binet in France ". He was one of the commissioners appointed to build the state capitol 1874 ; in 1867 appointed clerk of Westchester County, but resigned after a short service ; made immigration commissioner by New York Legislature in 1870, but declined to serve ; member of boundary commission of the state of New York in 1875 ; had also been commissioner of quarantine and president of Court of Claims of New York City and commissioner of taxes and assessments for the city and county of New York ; defeated for Lieutenant Governor of New York on the Liberal Republican-Democratic ticket in 1872 ; candidate for U. S. Senator from New York in 1881, but withdrew after the 41st ballot ; declined nomination as a senator in 1885 ; but elected to the U. S. Stroud High School was founded in 1904 as the Girls ' Endowed School by a group of local citizens led by solicitor Mr. A. J.
