Augustus (, September 23, 63 BC – August 19, 14 AD ) was the founder of the Roman Empire and its first Emperor, ruling from 27 BC until his death in 14 AD.

Though he quickly dropped " Octavianus " from his name and his contemporaries referred to him as " Caesar " during this period, historians refer to him as Octavian between 44 BC and 27 BC.

* In 27 BC, following his defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, the Roman Senate voted him new titles, officially becoming Imperator Caesar Divi Filius Augustus.

It is the events of 27 BC from which he obtained his traditional name of Augustus, which historians use in reference from 27 BC until his death in 14 AD.

However, despite the fact that he never officially bore the name Octavianus, to save confusing the dead dictator with his heir, historians often refer to the new Caesar — between his adoption and his assumption, in 27 BC, of the name Augustus — as Octavian.

He was said to have been born in c. 525 BC in Eleusis, a small town about 27 kilometers northwest of Athens, which is nestled in the fertile valleys of western Attica, though the date is most likely based on counting back forty years from his first victory in the Great Dionysia.

The Roman province by that name had been on hiatus from 27 BC and re-established by Emperor Vespasian only in 72 AD.

Finally, although Dio states that Crassus was voted a Triumph in Rome by the Senate, there is no evidence in inscriptions of that year ( 27 BC ) that it was actually celebrated.

Augustus, the first Emperor ( r. 27 BC – AD 14 ), had nominally shared power with his colleagues, and more formal offices of co-Emperor had existed from Marcus Aurelius ( r. 161 – 80 ) on.

Augustus planned invasions in 34, 27 and 25 BC, but circumstances were never favourable, and the relationship between Britain and Rome settled into one of diplomacy and trade.

On his way to Pontus, Caesar visited from 27 to 29 May 47 BC, ( 25 – 27 May < sup > greg .</ sup >) Tarsus, where he met enthusiastic support, but where, according to Cicero, Cassius was planning to kill him at this point.

* 27 BC – Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus is granted the title Augustus by the Roman Senate, marking the beginning of the Roman Empire.

The Julio-Claudian dynasty normally refers to the first five Roman Emperors: Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula ( also known as Gaius ), Claudius, and Nero, or the family to which they belonged ; they ruled the Roman Empire from its formation, in the second half of the 1st century ( 44 / 31 / 27 ) BC, until AD 68, when the last of the line, Nero, committed suicide.

# Augustus ( 27 BC – AD 14 )

The emperor Augustus took a personal interest in the literary works produced during his years of power from 27 BC to AD 14.

In the following years, Octavian, who was known as Augustus after 27 BC, managed to accumulate in his person all administrative, political, and military offices.

The city was renamed Colonia Iulia Philippensis, and then Colonia Augusta Iulia Philippensis after January, 27 BC, when Octavian received the title Augustus from the Roman Senate.

Following Caesar's murder, Octavian assumed permanent title of imperator and inaugurated his well prepared principate under the name Augustus in 27 BCE.

With the complete defeat of Antony and the marginalisation of Lepidus, Octavian, having restyled himself " Augustus " in 27 BC, remained as the sole master of the Roman world, and proceeded to establish the Principate as the first Roman " emperor ".

After Mark Antony's suicide following the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, Octavian had removed all obstacles to his power and henceforth ruled as Emperor, from 27 BC on, under the honorary title Augustus.

In 27 BC, Octavian appeared before the Senate and offered to retire from active politics and government ; the Senate not only requested he remain, but increased his powers and made them lifelong, awarding him the title of Augustus ( the elevated or divine one, somewhat less than a god but approaching divinity ).

In concert with Gaius Vibius Pansa Caetronianus and Octavian, Hirtius compelled Antony to retire but in the fighting was slain ( around 25 April or 27 April ).

In 27 BC Octavian was granted the title of Augustus by the Senate.

For political and personal reasons Octavian chose to emphasise his relationship with Caesar by styling himself simply " Imperator Caesar " ( whereto the Roman Senate added the honorific Augustus, " Majestic " or " Venerable ", in 27 BC ), without any of the other elements of his full name.

The title, in full, princeps senatus / princeps civitatis ( first amongst the senators, viz., amongst the citizens ), was first adopted by Octavian Caesar Augustus ( 27 BC-AD 14 ), the first Roman ' Emperor ', who chose – like the assassinated dictator Julius Caesar – not to reintroduce a legal monarchy.

Octavian emerged from a series of civil wars as the sole master of the Roman world, and in January 27 BC was appointed princeps senatus and given the cognomen " Augustus " ( Latin, " Majestic " or " Venerable "); henceforth he styled himself " Imperator Caesar Augustus ".

In 27 BC they returned to Rome, and Octavian was given the title of Augustus.

The Lex Titia was a Roman law passed on November 27, 43 BC, that legalized the Second Triumvirate of Octavian, Marc Antony, and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus.

At the time of Julia's birth, Augustus had not yet received the title " Augustus " and was known as Octavian until 27 BC, when Julia was 12.
