During the course of the war the area of Congress Poland became occupied by the Central Powers, with Warsaw captured by the Germans on 5 August 1915.

On August 23, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov – Ribbentrop non-aggression pact, which secretly provided for the dismemberment of Poland into Nazi and Soviet-controlled zones.

Janusz Andrzej Zajdel ( 15 August 1938 in Warsaw – 19 July 1985 in Warsaw ) was a prominent Polish science fiction author, second in popularity in Poland after Stanisław Lem.
