Born in 1809 in Liverpool, England, at 62 Rodney Street, William Ewart Gladstone was the fourth son of the merchant Sir John Gladstone from Leith ( now a suburb of Edinburgh ), and his second wife, Anne MacKenzie Robertson, from Dingwall, Ross-shire.

William, father of William Ewart, was business partner of Sir John Gladstones ( sic ), father of four times Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.

He was one of the few prime ministers ( others include William Pitt the Younger, Sir Winston Churchill, George Canning, Spencer Percival, William Ewart Gladstone, Edward Heath, John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown ) who never acceded to the peerage.

John Poyntz Spencer, 5th Earl Spencer KG, PC ( 27 October 1835 – 13 August 1910 ), known as Viscount Althorp from 1845 to 1857 ( and also known as the Red Earl because of his distinctive long red beard ), was a British Liberal Party politician under and close friend of British prime minister William Ewart Gladstone.

After a childhood spent at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, of which his father was governor ( now called " commandant "), he was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he was a contemporary and friend of William Ewart Gladstone and John Henry Newman.

A justification had to be given for the rejection of King John in whose name William Wallace and Andrew de Moray had rebelled in 1297.

For a short time Wallace ruled Scotland in the name of John Balliol as Guardian of the realm.

In order to enter at a talent competition at University High School, Berry and Torrence helped form a doo-wop group known as " The Barons " ( named after their high school's Hi-Y club, where they were members ), which comprised fellow University High students William " Chuck " Steele ( lead singer ), Arnold P. " Arnie " Ginsburg ( born November 19, 1939 ) ( 1st tenor ), Wallace S. " Wally " Yagi ( born 20 July 1940 ) ( 2nd tenor ), John ' Sagi " Seligman ( 2nd tenor ), with Berry singing bass, and Torrence providing falsetto.

That same year, the three Goons reunited for a televised re-staging of a vintage Goon Show for Thames Television, with John Cleese substituting for the late Wallace Greenslade, but the pilot was not successful and no further programmes were made.

After the battle, Moray and Wallace assumed the title of Guardians of the Kingdom of Scotland on behalf of King John Balliol.

By September 1298, Wallace resigned as Guardian of Scotland in favour of Robert the Bruce, Earl of Carrick and future king, and John Comyn of Badenoch, King John Balliol's nephew.

Wallace evaded capture by the English until 5 August 1305 when John de Menteith, a Scottish knight loyal to Edward, turned Wallace over to English soldiers at Robroyston near Glasgow.

Documents found on Wallace, and delivered to Edward by John de Segrave, included letters of safe conduct from Haakon V of Norway, Philip IV of France, and John Balliol, with other documents.

" With this, Wallace asserted that the absent John Balliol was officially his king.

The First War of Scottish Independence can be loosely divided into four phases: the initial English invasion and success in 1296 ; the campaigns led by William Wallace, Andrew de Moray and various Scottish Guardians from 1297 until John Comyn negotiated for the general Scottish submission in February 1304 ; the renewed campaigns led by Robert the Bruce following his killing of The Red Comyn in Dumfries in 1306 to his and the Scottish victory at Bannockburn in 1314 ; and a final phase of Scottish diplomatic initiatives and military campaigns in Scotland, Ireland and Northern England from 1314 until the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton in 1328.

Wallace was succeeded by Robert Bruce and John Comyn as joint guardians, with William de Lamberton, Bishop of St Andrews being appointed in 1299 as a third, neutral Guardian to try and maintain order between them.

During that year, diplomatic pressure from France and Rome persuaded Edward to release the imprisoned King John into the custody of the pope, and Wallace was sent to France to seek the aid of Philip IV ; he possibly also travelled to Rome.

On 11 September 1297, the forces of Andrew Moray and William Wallace defeated the combined English forces of John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey and Hugh de Cressingham near Stirling, on the River Forth.
