Irish prisoners were again sent to Bermuda in the 19th century, including participants in the ill-fated Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848 and Nationalist journalist and politician John Mitchel.

In 1847 Le Fanu supported John Mitchel and Thomas Francis Meagher in their campaign against the indifference of the government to the Irish Famine.

John Mitchel, the most committed advocate of revolution, had been arrested early in 1848 and transported to Australia on the purposefully created charge of Treason-felony.

John Mitchel

John Mitchel (; 3 November 1815 – 20 March 1875 ) was an Irish nationalist activist, solicitor and political journalist.

At the age of four, John Mitchel was sent to a classical school, run by an old minister named Moor, nicknamed " Gospel Moor " by the students.

Mitchel also met at the school his lifelong friend, John Martin, who was to experience and share in much of his later career.

Their second, James, born in February 1840, was to be the father of the New York Mayor John Purroy Mitchel.

John Mitchel took an active part in the preparation, and though violence was anticipated, Newry then being a stronghold of the Orange Order, it went off peacefully.

John Mitchel and his family spent the next five years in Banbridge, where two more children were born, Henrietta in October 1842, and William in May 1844.

John Mitchel was often employed by the Catholics in the legal proceedings arising out of these affrays.

Until his marriage, John Mitchel had by and large taken his politics from his father, who according to Dillon states had " begun to comprehend the degradation of his countrymen ".

In the Prospectus it was announced that the paper would be edited by John Mitchel, " aided by Thomas Devin Reilly, John Martin of Loughorne and other competent contributors.

Such an opportunity arose when on 15 April 1848, legal proceedings were instigated against John Mitchel.

In a letter to Lord Clarendon, John Mitchel addressed the issue of Jury Packing, and made the following observations:

The chief Police Magistrate Mr Porter handed Mitchel a warrant for his committal, which affirmed that " John Mitchel ... did wilfully and feloniously compass, imagine, invent, devise, and intend to deprive and depose our most Gracious Lady the Queen, from the style, honour, and royal name of the imperial crown of the United Kingdom, and levy war against her Majesty, in order, by force and constraint, to compel her to change her measures and counsels ; and such compassings, imaginations, inventions, devices, and intentions, did ... express, utter and declare, by publishing certain printings in a certain news paper called The United Irishman.

Barstow concluded that as Rhode Island's John Brown became a canonized hero, if not a saint, so would it be with John Brown of Harper's Ferry.

* In 1870 the small City of Ragusa ( Dubrovnik ) became the first small Lifeboat to cross the Atlantic from Cork to Boston with two men crew, John Charles Buckley and Nikola Primorac ( di Costa ), only.

The American philosopher and educator John Dewey became impressed with the Alexander technique after his headaches, neck pains, blurred vision, and stress symptoms largely improved during the time he used Alexander's advice to change his posture.

It became the expectation — rather than the exception — that those in the public eye should write about themselves — not only writers such as Charles Dickens ( who also incorporated autobiographical elements in his novels ) and Anthony Trollope, but also politicians ( e. g. Henry Brooks Adams ), philosophers ( e. g. John Stuart Mill ), churchmen such as Cardinal Newman, and entertainers such as P. T. Barnum.

Other Revolutionary War heroes who became figures of American folklore include: Benedict Arnold, Benjamin Franklin, Nathan Hale, John Hancock, Andrew Jackson, and John Paul Jones and Francis Marion.

When Angelo Cardinal Roncalli was elected and became Pope John, there was some confusion as to whether he would be John XXIII or John XXIV ; he then declared that he was John XXIII to put this question to rest.

This became the dominant form in the Restoration, when composers such as Henry Purcell ( 1659 – 1695 ) and John Blow ( 1649 – 1708 ) wrote elaborate examples for the Chapel Royal with orchestral accompaniment.

* John James Maximilian Oertel ( 1811 – 1882 ), born in Ansbach, was a Lutheran clergyman who later converted to Roman Catholicism, became a professor of German at Fordham University in the United States, and later edited and founded several newspapers in the United States, including one that would become the leading German-language newspaper in the county, Baltimore's Kirchenzeitung.

John became a painter and illustrator ; Richard was an actor in films such as Yankee Doodle Dandy and later an Emmy-nominated television director of such shows as The Beverly Hillbillies.

It was at the Watkinson library that Whorf became friends with the young boy, John B. Carroll, who later went on to study psychology under B. F. Skinner, and who in 1956 edited and published a selection of Whorf's essays as Language, Thought and Reality.

After the disaster of The Representative, John Gibson Lockhart became a bitter enemy and the two never reconciled.

The Yellow Coach Manufacturing Company which rapidly became a major manufacturer of buses was founded in Chicago in 1923 by John D. Hertz.

" After wearing glasses for a while, his eyes became adjusted to the lenses, and at that point he became nearsighted and really did need glasses, which would years later establish John as one of the most famous " four-eyes " in rock and roll, though Holly is widely considered to be the first.

Several collectors have catalogued the songs including John Meredith whose recording in the 1950s became the basis of the collection in the National Library of Australia.
