Alan Jay Lerner ( August 31, 1918 – June 14, 1986 ) was an American lyricist and librettist.

Born in New York City, he was the son of Edith Adelson Lerner and Joseph Jay Lerner, whose brother, Samuel Alexander Lerner, was founder and owner of the Lerner Stores, a chain of dress shops.

Alan Jay Lerner was educated at Bedales School in England, The Choate School ( now Choate Rosemary Hall ) in Wallingford, Connecticut, ( where he wrote " The Choate Marching Song ") and Harvard.

At both Choate and Harvard, Lerner was a classmate of John F. Kennedy ; at Choate they had worked together on the yearbook staff.

Lerner and Loewe's first collaboration was a musical adaptation of Barry Conners's farce The Patsy called Life of the Party for a Detroit stock company.

This was the same team who would later join with Lerner and Loewe to create Gigi.

Before finishing the musical, Lerner was eager to write while My Fair Lady was taking so long to complete.

Lerner was hospitalized with bleeding ulcers while Loewe continued to have heart troubles.

Camelot was a hit nonetheless, with a poignant coda ; immediately following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, his widow told Life magazine that JFK's administration reminded her of the " one brief shining moment " of Lerner and Loewe's Camelot.

In 1965 Lerner collaborated again with Burton Lane on the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, which was adapted for film in 1970.

At this time, Lerner was hired by film producer Arthur P. Jacobs to write a treatment for an upcoming film project, Doctor Dolittle, but Lerner abrogated his contract after several non-productive months of non-communicative procrastination and was replaced with Leslie Bricusse.

Lerner was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971.

After their divorce in 1981, Lerner was ordered to pay her a settlement of $ 50, 000.

The divorces cost him much of his wealth, but Lerner bears primary responsibility for his financial ups and downs, and was apparently less than truthful about his financial fecklessness.

Lerner worked with Kurt Weill on the stage musical Love Life ( 1948 ) and Burton Lane on the movie musical Royal Wedding ( 1951 ).

Lerner and Loewe's run of success continued with their next project, a film adaptation of stories from Colette, the Academy Award winning film musical Gigi, starring Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan and Maurice Chevalier.

Loewe retired to Palm Springs, California while Lerner went through a series of musicals, some successful, some not, with such composers as André Previn ( Coco ), John Barry ( Lolita, My Love ), Leonard Bernstein ( 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ), Burton Lane ( Carmelina ) and Charles Strouse ( Dance a Little Closer, based on the film, Idiot's Delight, nicknamed Close A Little Faster by Broadway wags because it closed on opening night ).

Most biographers blame Lerner's professional decline on the lack of a strong director with whom Lerner could collaborate, as Neil Simon did with Mike Nichols or Stephen Sondheim with Harold Prince ( Moss Hart, who had directed My Fair Lady, died shortly after Camelot opened ).

( Musseli told friends she had not wanted to sell her home, but that Lerner urged her to cut her ties with her native city and that she entrusted Lerner with the proceeds of the sale, for investment in the U. S .) The daughter of a World War One French war hero and herself an unsung heroine of the Resistance, whose Corsican forebears were intimates of Napoleon Bonaparte, she later made Lerner the gift of a chateau in France after he declared to her that he wanted a French rural retreat where he could write.

Lerner would often struggle with writing his lyrics.

Part of the reason that Hayek stressed the knowledge problem was also because he was mainly concerned with debating the proposal for Market Socialism and the Lange Model by Oskar R. Lange ( 1938 ) and Hayek's student Abba Lerner ( 1934, 1937, 1938 ), which was developed in response to the calculation argument.

Economists who studied with Hayek at the LSE in the 1930s and the 1940s include Arthur Lewis, Ronald Coase, John Kenneth Galbraith, Abba Lerner, Nicholas Kaldor, George Shackle, Thomas Balogh, Vera Smith, L. K. Jha, Arthur Seldon, Paul Rosenstein-Rodan, and Oskar Lange.

Much of his writing since the 1970s has been in collaboration, particularly with Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes, but also Brenda Cooper and Edward M. Lerner.

Paint Your Wagon is a Broadway musical comedy, with book and lyrics by Alan J. Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe.

Seven years later, a musical film version with a screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner and a score by Lerner and Frederick Loewe won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz first tried, and then Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II attempted, but gave up and Hammerstein told Lerner " Pygmalion had no subplot ".

Lerner wrote in his autobiography ( as quoted by The New York Times ): " All I can say is that if I had no flair for marriage, I also had no flair for bachelorhood.

Lerner had four children: three daughters, Susan ( by Boyd ), Liza and Jennifer ( by Olson ); and one son, Michael ( by di Borgo ).

" Lerner had previously served a three year sentence for heading a group that plotted to overthrow the government and establish a state based upon religious law.

When Shaw heard, in 1921, that Franz Lehár wanted to set his play Pygmalion to music, he sent word to Vienna that Lehár be instructed that he could not touch Pygmalion without infringing Shaw's copyright and that Shaw had " no intention of allowing the history of The Chocolate Soldier to be repeated "( only after Shaw's death was Pygmalion eventually adapted by Lerner and Loewe as My Fair Lady ).

Lyricist and book writer Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe had previously collaborated on three musicals ; the first, Life of the Party, closed during pre-Broadway tryouts, and the second and third, What's Up?

However, Lerner denied that he had based the book on an older story, and, in an explanation published in The New York Times, stated that he didn't learn of the existence of the Germelshausen story until after he had completed the first draft of Brigadoon.

Lerner was sentenced and transported to Terminal Island Federal Penitentiary in San Pedro, California, where Lerner served several months before the 9th Circuit Federal Appeals Court ordered Lerner released ( despite the claim made by J. Edgar Hoover in a public statement repeated on radio and television that Lerner was " one of the most dangerous criminals in America " though he had never engaged in any act of violence ).

Meanwhile, Lerner's contract was not renewed and the State of Washington Legislature had passed " the Lerner act " requiring that the University of Washington never hire anyone " who might engage in illegal political activity ," a law later overturned by the Washington Supreme Court.

Lerner received rabbinical ordination in 1995 through a beth din ( rabbinical court ) composed of three rabbis, " each of whom had received orthodox rabbinic ordination ".

The reality is that Micheline Musseli Pozzo di Borgo, a French aristocrat who at 20 was France's youngest lawyer ever, brought considerable wealth to her marriage to Lerner and lost most of it through him, including nearly $ 600, 000 from the sale of her Parisian apartment, which Lerner placed in investments that either failed or were looted by him during periods of financial desperation.

Hayek's work on the macroeconomic subjects of central planning, trade cycle theory, the division of knowledge, and entrepreneurial adaptation especially, differ greatly from the opinions of macroeconomic " Marshallian " economists in the tradition of John Maynard Keynes and the microeconomic " Walrasian " economists in the tradition of Abba Lerner.

" Rock Island " from Meridith Wilson's " The Music Man " is wholly spoken by an ensemble of travelling salesmen, as are most of the numbers for British actor Rex Harrison in the 1964 Lerner and Loewe musical My Fair Lady.

For example, the characters in Lerner and Loewe's musical My Fair Lady, which is based on George Bernard Shaw's 1914 play Pygmalion, are essentially unchanged from those in Shaw's stage work, because the musical version is quite faithful to the original ( except for the changed ending, which is pessimistic in the play ), even to the point of retaining most of Shaw's dialogue.

According to Lerner, " he kept the boat from rocking, and Camelot might never have reached New York if it hadn't been for him.

The production starred Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet. The trio appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and sang a few numbers from the musical, along with an appearance by Lerner and Loewe.

By far his biggest hit was the musical My Fair Lady ( 1956 ), adapted from George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe.

In 1970, Le Mesurier appeared in Ralph Thomas's Doctor in Trouble as the Purser ; he also made an appearance in Vincente Minnelli's On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, a romantic fantasy musical with a screenplay by Alan Jay Lerner adapted from his book for the 1965 stage production of the same name, featuring Barbra Streisand in the main role.

RCA Victor made several studio cast recording albums as well, including a Lerner and Loewe series with Jan Peerce, Jane Powell, and Robert Merrill, as well as a 1963 album of excerpts from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, with its 1952 revival leads, Leontyne Price and William Warfield, but a different supporting cast.

While at Berkeley, Lerner became a leader in the Berkeley student movement and the Free Speech Movement, chair of the Free Student Union, and chair from 1966-1968 of the Berkeley chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society.

In September 1992, Bill Zwecker joined the Sun-Times as a gossip columnist from the troubled Lerner Newspapers suburban weekly newspaper chain, where had written the VIPeople column.

Lerner would often take potatoes from his mother's garden and, using various other fruits and vegetables as facial features, he would make dolls with which his younger sisters could play.

As an example from the American musical, several long speeches in Lerner and Loewe's Brigadoon are delivered over an accompaniment of evocative music.

In 1958 dermatology professor Aaron B. Lerner and colleagues at Yale University, in the hope that a substance from the pineal might be useful in treating skin diseases, isolated the hormone from rat urine and named it melatonin.

The second annual BusinessWeek review of the " Best Undergraduate B-Schools " ranked UD's Lerner College of Business and Economics 29th among the nation's top 58 public university programs and 61st among the 500 schools earning international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

As of July 2008, the department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management was moved from the College of Education and Public Policy to Lerner College.

Lerner College also offers a degree in Sports Management, which moved from the College of Health Sciences in July 2010.

In the biography, The Grimké Sisters from South Carolina, historian Gerda Lerner writes that “ It never occurred to that she should abide by the superior judgment of her male relatives or that anyone might consider her inferior, simply for being a girl .” More so than her elder sister ( and later, fellow abolitionist ), Sarah, Angelina seemed to be naturally inquisitive and outspoken, a trait which often offended her rather traditional family and friends.

In 1953, Arthur Schwartz and Alan Jay Lerner obtained the rights to the show from Al Capp ; the three were to co-produce the show, with Schwartz writing the music and Lerner writing the book and lyrics for an opening during the 1954 – 55 season.
