Grotius posited that individual human beings had natural rights ; Hobbes asserted that men consent to abdicate their rights in favor of the absolute authority of government ( whether monarchial or parliamentary ); Pufendorf disputed Hobbes's equation of a state of nature with war ; Locke believed that natural rights were inalienable, and that the rule of God therefore superseded government authority ; and Rousseau believed that democracy ( self-rule ) was the best way of ensuring the general welfare while maintaining individual freedom under the rule of law.

In the fundamental principles, he follows almost entirely John Locke and Pufendorf ; but he works out with great skill the theory of moral obligation, referring it to the command or will of God.

Locke does speak of God " annexing " certain ideas to certain motions of bodies ; but nowhere does he propound a theory so definite as that here propounded by Hutcheson, which reminds us at least as much of the speculations of Nicolas Malebranche as of those of Locke.

In other words, Locke argues that you may be judged only for the acts of your body, as this is what is apparent to all but God ; however, you are in truth only responsible for the acts for which you are conscious.

A parallel development of a theory of popular sovereignty can be found among the School of Salamanca ( see e. g. Francisco de Vitoria ( 1483 – 1546 ) or Francisco Suarez ( 1548 – 1617 )), who ( like the theorists of the divine right of kings and Locke ) saw sovereignty as emanating originally from God, but ( unlike divine right theorists and in agreement with Locke ) passing from God to all people equally, not only to monarchs.

From these results we see that Shaftesbury, opposed to Hobbes and Locke, is in close agreement with Hutcheson, and that he is ultimately a deeply religious thinker, inasmuch as he discards the moral sanction of public opinion, the terrors of future punishment, and the authority of the civil authority as the main incentives to goodness, and substitutes the voice of conscience and the love of God.

John Locke begins by describing the state of nature, a picture much more stable than Thomas Hobbes ' state of " war of every man against every man ," and argues that all men are created equal in the state of nature by God.

In other words, rather than arguing for the presence of men by natural ideas, Locke assumes that all men are born by God.

In support of this argument he presents three main reasons: ( 1 ) individuals, according to Locke, cannot divest control over their souls to secular forces, as God does not appoint the magistrate ; ( 2 ) force cannot create the change necessary for salvation, because while it can coerce obedience, it cannot change one's beliefs ; and ( 3 ) even if coercion could persuade someone of a notion, it would not help for the salvation of the soul, because then birth would be related with salvation.

However, a closer reading of the text reveals that Locke relies on Biblical analysis at several key points in his argument, as does study of his spiritual life, mainly influenced by Deism, a belief in which God does not intervene in human affairs.

British philosopher John Locke argued that moral rules cannot be established from conscience because the differences in people's consciences would lead to contradictions.

The conceptual difficulty of bare particulars was illustrated by John Locke when he described a substance by itself, apart from its properties, as " something, I know not what.

Bliss ’ s concern about semantics finds an early referent in John Locke, whose Essay Concerning Human Understanding prevented people from those " vague and insignificant forms of speech " that may give the impression of being deep learning.

Locke believed that individuals had given consent to government and therefore authority derived from the people rather than from above.

According to Locke, a general idea is created by abstracting, drawing away, or removing the uncommon characteristic or characteristics from several particular ideas.

Instead, under the influence of Locke and Newton, deists turned to natural theology and to arguments based on experience and Nature: the cosmological argument and the argument from design.

Locke is famously attributed with holding the proposition that the human mind is a tabula rasa, a " blank tablet ," in Locke's words " white paper ," on which the experiences derived from sense impressions as a person's life proceeds are written.

According to Locke, our knowledge of things is a perception of ideas that are in accordance or discordance with each other, which is very different from the quest for certainty of Descartes.

" And, " Mr. Locke, in his chapter of power, says that, finding from experience, that there are several new productions in nature, and concluding that there must somewhere be a power capable of producing them, we arrive at last by this reasoning at the idea of power.

The American Declaration of Independence includes the words ( which echo Locke ) " all men are created equal ; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights ; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness ; that to insure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Kant focused on ideas drawn from British philosophers such as Locke, Berkeley and Hume but distinguished his transcendental or critical idealism from previous varieties ;

Locke was born on 29 August 1632, in a small thatched cottage by the church in Wrington, Somerset, about twelve miles from Bristol.

Through his friend Richard Lower, whom he knew from the Westminster School, Locke was introduced to medicine and the experimental philosophy being pursued at other universities and in the Royal Society, of which he eventually became a member.

Since Filmer's views essentially require that the Stuart family be uniquely descended from the patriarchs of the Bible, and since even in the late 17th century that was a difficult view to uphold, Locke attacked Filmer's views in his First Treatise on Government, freeing him to set out his own views in the Second Treatise on Civil Government.

Unlike Aquinas ' preponderant view on the salvation of the soul from original sin, Locke believed man comes into this world with a mind that is basically a tabula rasa.

His international experiences allowed him to break from Jesuit influence and study French philosophers such as Jacques Maritain and Emmanuel Mounier as well as John Locke and David Hume.

Anarchy, State and Utopia claims a heritage from John Locke's Second Treatise on Government and seeks to ground itself upon a natural law doctrine, but reaches some importantly different conclusions from Locke himself in several ways.
