However, as Alasdair MacIntyre notes ( in After Virtue, 2007 ), Sidgwick reluctantly had to confess that he had gone in search for Cosmos and found only Chaos, i. e., he could find no rational foundation to basic moral beliefs ; where he had hoped to find unity, he could only locate heterogeneity.

In general terms the task of After Virtue is to account both for the dysfunctional quality of moral discourse within modern society and rehabilitate what MacIntyre takes to be a forgotten alternative in the teleological rationality of Aristotelian virtue ethics.

MacIntyre opposes Nietzsche's return to the aristocratic ethics of Homeric Greece with the teleological approach to ethics pioneered by Aristotle.

In a review for Political Theory, William E. Connolly argues that MacIntyre sees Nietzsche as " the adversary to be defeated, but Nietzsche's voice is not heard clearly ".

Connolly objects that MacIntyre's defense of virtue doesn't take into account Nietzsche's critique and he also fails to build an account of telos that doesn't draw on biology in the way MacIntyre wanted to avoid — such a theory doesn't account for the fact that we are embodied.

The philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre published a book in 2006 titled, Edith Stein: A Philosophical Prologue, 1913-1922, in which he contrasted Stein's living out of her own personal philosophy with Martin Heidegger, whose actions during the Nazi era according to MacIntyre suggested a " bifurcation of personality.

Alasdair Chalmers MacIntyre ( born 1929 ) is a Scottish philosopher primarily known for his contribution to moral and political philosophy but known also for his work in history of philosophy and theology.

Up until that time MacIntyre had been a relatively influential analytic philosopher of a Marxist bent whose inquiries into moral philosophy had been conducted in a “ piecemeal way, focusing first on this problem and then on that, in a mode characteristic of much analytic philosophy .” However, after reading the works of Thomas Kuhn and Imre Lakatos on philosophy of science and epistemology MacIntyre was inspired to change the entire direction of his thought, tearing up the manuscript he had been working on and deciding to view the problems of modern moral and political philosophy “ not from the standpoint of liberal modernity, but instead from the standpoint of ... Aristotelian moral and political practice .”

MacIntyre converted to Roman Catholicism in the early 1980s, and now does his work against the background of what he calls an " Augustinian Thomist approach to moral philosophy.

The clear philosophical influence, however, was Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophy of language, the moral philosophy of Alasdair MacIntyre, and the sociological insights of Clifford Geertz and Peter Berger on the nature of communities.
